Dixon’s buzzer beater drives home Aggie win over Texans, 53-51

Box Score

LAWTON, Okla. – Kimric Dixon hit the biggest three-pointer of his career with four seconds remaining to give Cameron their twelfth Lone Star Conference win over Tarleton State, 53-51 at the Aggie Gym on Wednesday night.

The win for Cameron locked them in for the number two seed in the upcoming Lone Star Conference Tournament in Allen, Texas on Mar. 6-9.  Additionally, the Aggies won their thirteenth game in a row at home dating back to the 2011-12 season.

Cameron (16-7, 12-5 LSC) didn’t show much flash on the offensive end with Tim Johnson leading the way with 12 points.  Dixon and Asaad Robinson chipped in nine points each, while Andrew Thomas “Country” grabbed 10 rebounds and had eight points.

Tarleton (15-8, 8-7 LSC) was swept by the Aggies for the first time in conference play. Chuck Guy gave the Texans a career night with 26 points.

The Ags controlled the majority of the first half holding onto a six point lead (18-12) as late as the 5:38 mark. In the remainder of the half, Tarleton went on a 9-0 run that ended with a De’Andre Upchuch three-pointer at the buzzer to head into the locker room with a 21-18 lead.

In the second half, it was a cat and mouse game with neither team holding a three point lead and twelve lead changes. The drama peaked in the final minute of the game with Guy hitting a three-pointer to give the Texans a two point lead, 49-47.  After a one-for-two at the line the Aggies would make it a one point game with 45 seconds left.  In the next possession, Cameron would be forced to foul putting Guy at the line and he would hit both shots, giving Tarleton a three-point, 51-48 lead.

Cameron would have the ball next and Tarleton parted the seas for Johnson to hit an easy layup to pull Cameron back by one.  With both teams still in the single-bonus, Word was sent to the line to shoot the one-and-one.  Now with an opportunity to ice the Aggies, Word missed the first shot and Craig Foster ended up with the ball for the final possession.

Johnson took the first shot to pull Cameron ahead but was blocked by Tarleton and with the ball going out of bounds and remaining CU ball.  Head Coach Wade Alexander would take a timeout to draw out a play for the Aggie offense.

The inbound pass would go to Johnson, who threw it to Dixon on the right wing to drive home a three-pointer to win the game.

Cameron didn’t shoot the ball well throughout the night going 27.1 percent from the field, while Tarleton went 47.7 percent shooting.  Rebounding was the difference with CU grabbing 41 (19 offensive) boards compared to 22 (3 offensive) by TSU.   The Aggies took advantage of the offensive boards and put up 13 second chance points while the Texans had zero.

The Aggies will have one more LSC game, traveling to Texas A&M Commerce on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m.
