Cameron holds off West Texas, 69-68

Box Score LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron men's basketball has made a habit of winning close games and they continued that trend against West Texas A&M taking down the Buffs 69-68 on Saturday.

This was the third time in the last six days that CU (8-5, 2-0 LSC) has won a game with two points or under and the second time in program history that they have opened conference play 2-0.

"We'll take it…we played a bunch of tough games early in the season to prepare us for some close games and so far it has paid off," said head coach Nate Gamet. "We struggled in the first half of the season, we lost some games that we probably shouldn't have lost and we have played some really good teams. The guys never quit, never stopped working, and understood the process."

"We've been preaching one game at a time and don't look forward because no game in this league is easy. Every game is going to be a battle and I think the more we do this, the better it will help us down the road and in tournament play."

Will Cook led all scorers on the floor with 23 points; he would also add a pair of steals and a block. Craig Foster added 14 points and chipped in six dishes; Aaron Thompson was CU's over player in double digits with 12.

After a 7-7 tie early, Cameron hit shots from every direction and stormed ahead by nine points midway through the first half. The Buffs would rally to close the Aggie gap to one point with just under four minutes remaining before Cook slammed the door shut and carried the Aggies with eight straight points to make it a 34-25 ballgame.

West Texas responded back with a three but Cameron left for the intermission with a 36-28 lead. Cook led all scorers on the floor with 16 points and CU shot 52% on the floor.

However, Cameron's lead dwindled in the opening minutes of the second half and the Buffs managed to tie the game at 41 each with 14 minutes to go. The scoring drought for CU continued and WT took their first lead of the game and pushed ahead by five (52-47) at the midway point.

A bucket and a pair of shots at the line pushed the Aggies back into a tie ballgame in the closing minutes and Foster nailed a jumper to hand the CU a slim 64-62 lead with 41 seconds left.

After trading shots, Cameron maintained a three point lead with three seconds to go. A made free throw by Sean McGary turned out to be difference with the Buffs nailing a three-pointer at buzzer but they would fall one point short (69-68).

The Aggies out-rebounded the Buffs 30 to 27 but they were outshot by WT 47.2% to CU's 45.8%.

Cameron will remain at home to host Texas A&M Commerce on Wednesday at 8 pm.
