Box Score LAWTON, Okla. – Dramatic close games have become a habit for the Cameron University men's basketball team for the past two weeks and that didn't change on Wednesday night as the Aggies overtook Texas A&M Commerce, 69-66 at the Aggie Gym.
Cameron (9-5, 3-0 LSC) has won their fifth contest in a row and remain perfect in conference play this season; for the Lions (12-4, 1-3 LSC) this was their third loss in Lone Star Conference action and fourth overall.
The Aggies have won each of their last four games under three points or less and they are off to their best start in LSC action.
"You just need to go out there and battle every night and if this is our ammo winning for close games, we'll take it," said head coach
Nate Gamet. "The guys really stepped it up against the second highest scoring team in the conference…we wanted to dictate the pace, make them play, and do what we wanted them to do."
"Our bench was absolutely huge tonight, we got guys who understand the game and that's good. We got a tough road ahead and hopefully we aren't done yet and do what we need to."
First half proved to be a back and forth game with six ties and four lead changes but Cameron would lead at intermission, 33-29. The Aggies were helped by
Will Cook who led all scorers with eight first half points. Charles Joy went a perfect 3-3 from the field and had seven points.
Cameron opened up the second half quickly after
Craig Foster sank a trey to give them their largest lead of the night at seven points (37-29). However, the relentless Lions continued to stay on Cameron's heels and took a 51-49 lead after a 9-2 run with just under nine minutes left.
After trading buckets the Lions had a two point lead with a minute remaining until Cook sank a three-pointer in front of the Aggie bench to put the Ags up 65-64. The Lions quickly went on their end of the court and got a layup to retake the lead before Cook was sent to the line to shoot free throws; a pair of clutch shots by Cook at the stripe gave Cameron the lead for the rest of the night.
Cook led the all scorers on the floor with 17 points and eight rebounds, Sean McGary came up a season high 13 points, and Foster chipped in 12 with a pair of blocks and steals.
As a team Cameron shot the ball at 44.2% from the field to edge the Lions who hit 40.7%. The Aggies also had the edge in rebounds with 32 compared to Texas A&M Commerce who had 31.
The Aggie men will hit the road on Saturday, Jan. 18 to face #6 Tarleton State with a 7 pm tipoff.
