Box Score PORTALES, NM - For the second time in less than a week the Cameron University men's basketball team dodged a last second comeback and held off Eastern New Mexico 59-58 on Wednesday night.
Last season Cameron fell late at the hands of Rodney Blackmond who drilled a jumper with two seconds to go to give ENMU the win. This season Blackmond had a chance at the buzzer to repeat history but luckily for the Aggies lightning didn't strike twice for the Greyhounds.
"We struggled getting in and handling their press but our guys really handled the situation well when it came down to crunch time," said head coach
Nate Gamet. "We're getting better as a group and learning how to play a full 40 minute game, I felt like we played a good 35 minutes today."
"Overall, we'll take a win any way we can get them right now."
Cameron (7-5, 1-0 LSC) has won their last four out of five games;
Will Cook and
Aaron Thompson both led the Ags with 13 points. The Greyhounds (6-6, 0-1 LSC) were led by Rafael Love who scored 15.
After a 23-23 tie at the half, Cameron shut down the Greyhounds offensively for nearly 6:30 minutes and went on an 11-0 run. The Aggies held onto a 10 point lead until ENMU drilled a pair of three-pointers with seven minutes to go. Cameron countered with an
Asaad Robinson three pointer and a
Desmond Henry dunk.
With under a minute left in the game and a seven point CU lead the Greyhounds mounted a 6-0 run to get within a point with 12 seconds left on the clock. Following an ENMU timeout, Cameron had possession of the ball but they would turn it over to the Greyhounds. ENMU's Rodney Blackmond with a chance to win the game took a shot at the buzzer but would miss to give Cameron the win.
Cameron shot 47.1 from the field off of 24-51 shooting; Eastern New Mexico went 35.7% on the floor off of 20-56 shots. The Ags were out-rebounded 34 to 30 by the Greyhounds.
The Aggies will return home to face West Texas A&M on Saturday at 4 pm.
