Cameron loses 3-1 to Texas A&M-Commerce

LAWTON – Cameron opened with a fast start but Texas A&M-Commerce would come up with a 3-1 win on Saturday at the Aggie Gym.   The Aggies have dropped their last five in a row and they are now 10-13 overall and 3-11 in the Lone Star Conference, the Lions are 5-20 and 3-10 in league play.

Cameron opened the match with the lead and never let it go to take the first set 25-15 over the Lions.  The Aggies knocked down 12 kills and only had one error, while hitting .355 in the win.  Kat Evans shot down four kills and Cristina Viera added three.

Set two proved to be neck and neck early for both the Aggies and Lions with five ties and five lead changes.  Both teams manufactured multiple rallies, with Commerce edging ahead with a 22-16 lead late. Cameron fired back and scored four straight points to cut the lead to two, but after a couple traded points, the Lions took the set on a kill by Amy Devault. CU hit .200 with 16 kills in the second frame, while TAMUC hit .257.

The Aggies kicked off the third set with a 4-0 run and later extended their lead to 9-3 on a Paige Holt kill. The Lions rallied back with a 7-1 run to tie the set at 10-10. After a couple of three point rallies by each team, Commerce took the lead with another kill, making it set point at 24-20. CU staged a four point rally, powered by two Viera kills, and tied the set at 24, but the Lions scored two straight points on Devault kills to win set three 26-24 and take the 2-1 match lead.

In the fourth set, the teams traded points until Commerce had a one point lead at 8-7. From there, the Lions went on a nine point rally to take a 10 point lead at 17-7. Despite the Aggies rattling off a 6-2 run to cut the lead to six, Commerce finished the set on a 6-1 run of their own to win 25-14 and take the match. Cameron hit in the negatives in the fourth frame, while the Lions had 14 kills on a .250 hitting percentage.

Evans paced CU with 14 kills, while having a .324 hitting percentage.  Three Aggies also had double-double matches with Viera having 11 kills and 11 digs, Ingrid Boatman had 26 assists and 14 digs, and Kayla Hebert chipped in 16 assists and 13 digs.

Texas A&M-Commerce's Amy Davault led both teams with 17 kills and completed a double-double afternoon with a match high 25 digs.
