Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Aggies dominate season opener against St. Gregory's

LAWTON – In their first game of the 2014-15 season, the Cameron men's basketball team put on an impressive show in front of the home crowd, beating St. Gregory's 93-73 Friday night. The Aggies had four players with double-digit point games, with senior Desmond Henry leading the way with 16 points in the season opener.

"We have a lot of talented individuals on this team," said head coach Nate Gamet. "They really care for each other and they want to win. We shared the ball well, with 21 assists on 36 straight shots, and doing that with less than 13 turnovers will lead to success."

The early 4-0 deficit in the first half was the only time the Aggies trailed in the game. The two teams tied the score a couple of times early, but a 16 point run by Cameron would allow them to jump out to a big 25-9 lead. From there, CU controlled the first half, shooting 66 percent from the field, 62.5 percent from behind the arc, and 80 percent from the free throw line. Deondre Ray's 11 and Henry's 10 first half points had Cameron up 55-29 at the half.

With a comfortable lead already, the Aggies sailed through the second half with only a few blemishes. The Cavaliers had the upper hand in the second half scoring 44 points to CU's 38, and were able to cut the lead to fewer than 20 at one point. Unfortunately for the visitors, the lead was too large and the Aggie offense was too much to handle.  CU shot 44 percent in the second frame, with a 40 percent three point percentage, but struggled from the free point line, making only two of their six attempts in the second half. Cameron Lee had eight points in the half, while Zac Tabor had seven to lead Cameron to the victory.

CU was on fire the whole night, shooting 54.5 percent from the field, going 49 percent from behind the arc and 62.5 percent from the free throw line. The CU defense held SGU to shooting 37 percent from the field, 26 percent from the three point line, while going 14-17 from the charity stripe.

Cameron had almost 20 more rebounds that the Cavaliers, winning the battle on the boards 46-28, but SGU won the turnover battle forcing CU to give up the ball 12 times compared to their nine giveaways.

The Aggies were able to spread the ball well with nine players scoring five or more points, and 21 team assists. They also blocked five shots and had five steals as a team.

Henry went 8-10 from the field, and also pulled down seven rebounds and four assists to go along with his 16 points. Ray and Lee both scored 14 points in their Cameron debut, both knocking down four shots from behind the arc. Matthew Don was the fourth player in double digits, scoring 13 points on 6-7 shooting.

"We are hoping we see this from Desmond (Henry) all season. He and I have had some long talks and he has made some comments in practice and in games that make it seem like it has all clicked for him."

Cameron will be back in action on Saturday evening, hosting the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma at 6 p.m. at the Aggie Gym.
