Aggies fall to Fort Hays State, 93-52

HAYS, Kan. – The Cameron University women's basketball team got 12 points and six rebounds from DJ Vallier, but lost on the road to Fort Hays State 93-52. With the loss, the Aggies fall to 0-3 on the season with the Tigers moving to 3-1.

The Tigers came out firing in the first half, scoring nine straight points before the Aggies got on the scoreboard. FHS went on multiple runs and had a 33-6 lead with half way through the first half. The Aggies went on a 10-2 run to cut down the gap, but Fort Hays state continued to be on fire, shooting 59 percent from the field, 43 percent from behind the arc, and 100 percent from the free throw line to take a 53-21 lead into halftime.

Cameron shot just 28 percent from the field and 20 percent from three point range in the first half, with Brandi Leal leading the team with six points, while Markita Zeigler had five and four points and six rebounds at the half.

Fort Hays State's lead held strong throughout the second half, even though the Aggies were able to get a little bit of offense going, shooting 33 percent from the field, but missed free throws prevented them from cutting into the Tigers lead.

As a team, the Aggies shot 31 percent from the field, shooting 28 percent from behind the arc and hitting 61 percent of their free throws. They turned the ball over 22 times, compared to FHS's six turnovers, but did a good job on the glass, grabbing 39 rebounds as a team.

Vallier was just 2-5 from the field, but made all eight of her free throw attempts and scored 10 of her 12 points in the second half. Additionally, Zeigler finished with 10 points and seven rebounds, while Leal finished with nine points and Cristina Soriano added eight points. Jazzmine Robinson led the team with 10 rebounds.

Kate Lehman led FHS with 26 points, and 14 rebounds, and was two blocks short of a triple double with eight. The Tigers had three others in double figures and as a team shot 52 percent from the field, 41 percent from the three point line and made all of their free throws. They grabbed 40 rebounds, had 25 assists, 11 steals, and 10 blocks as a team.

The Aggies will have a quick turnaround for their next game, as the will head to Ada, Okla. on Tuesday, Nov. 25 to face East Central Oklahoma.
