LAWTON – Cameron outshot Rogers State from the field but the Aggies would be on the losing end at home, falling 79-72 on Saturday afternoon at the Aggie Gym. With the loss to the Hillcats, CU will fall back to .500, 4-4, while Rogers State will move up to 6-2 in non-conference play.
Cameron had four in double-figures with
Deondre Ray leading the Aggies with 19 points with four made shots from downtown, he also added a pair of blocks. The Aggies were outrebounded by 10 with only 22 rebounds, their lowest total in over three years.
"If you don't execute your game plan against a really good team, you're going to struggle," said head coach
Nate Gamet. "We had a lot of opportunities to step up and go make plays but breakdowns in key moments cost us."
Cameron dug themselves into a hole from the opening tip after letting RSU start with seven unanswered points. However, CU responded back with an 11-3 run at the 15:14 mark to take their first lead of the night. The Aggie advantage was short-lived and the Hillcats maintained at least a possession lead for the majority of the remaining time left in the half, leading for nearly 14 minutes to take a 44-41 advantage into the intermission.
Despite the Rogers State lead, both teams mirrored each other with RSU shooting 48 percent from the field, and CU going 46.9 percent on their side of the floor; the Hillcats led the rebounding battle by four with 16.
Desmond Henry paced the Aggies with nine points at the half; DesJuan Newton led Rogers State with 10 points.
The Hillcats continued to stay out in front of the Aggies and reopened their seven point lead eight minutes into the second half. Cameron got back within a possession away of RSU after back-to-back buckets, but the Hillcats would pull away and open up a 70-60 led with five minutes to go. Rogers State continued to lead in the closing minutes until a triple by Ray with 43 seconds left got CU within six of RSU. After a pair of Hillcat free throws pulled them ahead by eight before
DJ Jackson nailed a jumper while being fouled and hit the and-one to make it a 77-72 game with 30 seconds left.
In the next possession, CU forced a turnover on RSU's side of the court but the Aggies would hand the ball back on their side of the court to seal their fate.
Jackson was CU second highest scorer with 15, Henry and
KeDorian Sullivan both had 11 each.
Rogers State was led by Newton and Donald Moore who both had 14 points; Frederico Santos had a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards.
The Aggies will remain at home to host Bacone College on Tuesday evening at 6 p.m.
