LAWTON – Cameron shook off a slow start and rolled past Bacone College 97-73 in non-conference play on Tuesday night at the Aggie Gym and are now 5-4 overall.Â
The contest against Cameron was an exhibition for Bacone College who was 4-7 heading into their trip to Lawton.
Cameron had five in double-figures with
Deondre Ray pacing CU with 20 points, with
KeDorian Sullivan and
Jamaal Brantley adding 14 each, along with 10 each from
Desmond Henry and
Bruce Barron.
"We were a little sloppy to start first half…we were letting them (Bacone) do what they wanted to do," said head coach
Nate Gamet. "In the final five minutes in the first half we starting spacing the ball better, passing the ball a little bit more and getting after it on the defensive end."
"We just need to space the ball better, make easy shots, limit silly turnovers, and make small adjustments on the defensive end. If we do those things we got a chance to make a run after the Christmas break."
Bacone proved to be pesky for the Aggies early in the ballgame and stayed within a possession of CU for the first 12 minutes.  However, the tide turned for Cameron and picked up the pace as the half came to a close.  After leading the Warriors 31-28 with seven minutes left, CU would hold Bacone to only six additional points, and the Ags would head for their locker room with a 52-34 lead.
The Aggies shot a blazing 63 percent at the half and took advantage of 18 opportunities at the charity stripe by making 16 free throws. Ray would be CU's leading scorer at the intermission with 14 points.
Cameron continued their assault on the Warriors in the second half racked up a 28 point lead with 12:32 left before settling with the 97-73, 24 point victory.
The Aggies dominated the inside game with 48 points in the paint, 44 more than Bacone; CU also handled BC in the battle of the boards with 42 rebounds, compared to 23 by Bacone. Â Cameron shot 56.9 percent and made 26 free throws against Bacone who went 39.1 percent from the field on their end of the court.
Sullivan led CU with seven rebounds and added four blocks,
DJ Jackson came away with a game high six assists.
Geo Brewer led Bacone with 20 points, and Matt Qualls chipped in 11.
Cameron will return to action on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. with a trip to Southern Nazarene.
