Men's Basketball Preview: Northwestern Oklahoma

LAWTON -- The Aggies will open up 2015 at home against Northwestern Oklahoma State on Saturday for a 4 p.m. tipoff to close out CU's non-conference slate for the season.  Cameron (7-4) closed out the fall with a three game winning streak after handing Dallas Christian a 111-66 loss on Dec 20 for the Ags first 100 point game in seven seasons. Saturday's matchup between the Aggies and Rangers will also complete a home-and-home series with CU winning 78-54 in Alva.

A quick look at the Rangers: Since the Aggies visited Alva on Nov. 22, the Rangers after 1-4 and have dropped their last four in a row; on the road NWOSU is also 1-4 with their only road win coming at Northeastern State to start the season.  In the previous matchup between both programs it was a second half scoring outburst that carried CU to a 78-54 win that was paced by a career rebounding night by Desmond Henry who pulled down 14 boards and 11 points. 

The Rangers have averaged 65.7 points and 33.6 rebounds per game this season, while shooting 38.8 percent from the field, which are league lows in the Great American Conference.  Northwestern Oklahoma has three who are averaging in double-figures with T'aries Taylor pacing Northwestern Oklahoma with 13.1 points per game and shooting 47.8 percent from the field.  Adrian Motley has taken the most shots this year for the Rangers averaging 11.9 points, and has shot 38.9 percent from the field; Darrian Dempsey is averaging 10.7 points.

This will be the 28th meeting between these two programs with the Aggies winning the overall series 18-9 over the Rangers, and they are led by Andrew Brown who is 112-99 in eight seasons.

Last time out: Cameron provided a scare for Division I, University of Texas at San Antonio after leading for the majority of the opening half and rallying back from a 12 point deficit but the Aggies faded down the stretch to drop the exhibition 79-68 on Tuesday afternoon.  The Aggies cleared their bench and had 10 individuals lending a hand in the scoring effort on Tuesday against UTSA.  Deondre Ray paced the Aggies with 13 points and added a pair of blocks and assists in 21 minutes of work.  Cameron Lee knocked down three triples for nine points, with DJ Jackson and Jamaal Brantley both chipping in eight points.   Tank Mayberry led CU with four blocks in the rematch against his former squad.

The Aggies led in shooting with 41.5 percent of their shots made, compared to 36.1 percent from UTSA.  However, the Ags were out-rebounded by 16 with the Roadrunners pulling down 50 boards. From the arc, CU went 9-23 or 39.1 percent while knocking down 10 blocks, UTSA was 31 percent from downtown and had six blocks.  


Nationally speaking: Cameron has the fourth best field goal percentage in Division II at 52.6 percent, but they are second best in the Lone Star Conference with Angelo State leading the nation by making 55.6 percent of their shots on the floor.  In three point percentage, CU comes in sixth at 44 percent, which is tops in the LSC, and 4.2 back of BYU-Hawaii; Cameron Lee individually is tenth after making a LSC high 53.7 percent of his three pointers.  The Aggies also come in 18th in total blocks with 52, good for second best in the league, and 30 behind Midwestern State who is leading the nation.  DJ Jackson has the second best assist-turnover ratio in the LSC and 19th best nationally at a 3.23.
