First Tip: After dropping seven games in a row the Aggies have won back-to-back games and they will meet Angelo State in what could be a possible Lone Star Conference Tournament matchup. Past history has not been kind to the Ags while visiting San Angleo with Cameron winning five times out of 20 trips to ASU; despite the record the Aggies have won two in a row at Angelo State. At home this season the Rams are 10-2 falling earlier this season to Tarleton State and Texas A&M Kingsville. Angelo State leads the overall series 14-22 but Cameron holds a 6-4 advantage in the last 10 matchups.
In their matchup earlier this season Angleo State won 88-75L by hitting nine 3-pointers and taking a 44-30 halftime lead. The Rams shot 60.4% from the field in the game and 56.3% on 3-pointers (9 of 16); Cameron shot 44.1% from the field and 30% from the arc.
Standing Scenarios: The Aggies are one game back of Angleo State and Eastern New Mexico who are tied for the number-three and four seed. At 5-7 in league play the Aggies are tied with Texas A&M Commerce for the five and six seed. If the season were to end today Cameron would be awarded the six seed based on the LSC tiebreaker formula. Commerce would be the five seed based on having the highest conference win in the which would be against Angelo State.
The tiebreaker between ASU and ENMU would be broken and given to the Rams because their highest league win was against Midwestern State. In a scenario where Commerce and Cameron tied in the league standings and split their season match ups with Angelo State, and if Cameron and Commerce both lost their final games of the season the tiebreaker would come down to a coin flip.
However if both teams were to go 2-0 Commerce would have the tiebreaker due to have beaten Tarleton State.
a. Two-Way Ties: In the event of a two-way tie, the seed positions are determined by:
i. Record against each other;
ii. Record against conference opponents in descending order starting with the highest seeded team;
iii. If the above formula is not conclusive, the Commissioner shall conduct a coin flip to determine the highest seeded team(s).
If Angelo State, Cameron, Commerce, and Eastern New Mexico were all to tie or Cameron, Commerce, and Texas A&M Kingsville, or if three schools were to tie at the end of the season the LSC rules are as following:
At the conclusion of Conference play, if three or more teams are tied, the team with the most games won against other tied teams collectively will be awarded the highest seeded position. The remaining teams are placed at the beginning of the appropriate formula for "Multiple Ties" or "Two-Way Ties" until all ties have been broken.
If one team does not have a winning record (more games won) against the other tied teams collectively, the individual records against the other Conference opponents in descending order starting with the top-seeded team are compared. When one team is awarded the higher seeded position by this method, the remaining teams are placed at the beginning of the appropriate formula for "Multiple Ties" or "Two-Way Ties" until all ties have been broken.
About Angelo State: ASU is currently trying to snap a three game losing streak after starting off conference season 6-3. The Rams are second in the conference in field goal percentage at 47.6%. They also hold opposing offenses to 41.1% from the field which has them third in the LSC.
Kenny Williams leads the Lone Star Conference in scoring with 17.7 ppg, and is second in the conference with 8.0 rebounds per game. Senior Bryan Hammond is third in the LSC with 4.8 assists per game and a 1.7 assist/turnover ratio.
Last time out for the Aggies: Cameron survived a late comeback attempt by Texas A&M Kingsville to win 63-58 on Wednesday night at the Aggie Gym.
A late back court violation and an inbound pass turnover allowed Kingsville to get within one point of Cameron with 16 seconds left to go but late free throws would save the Ags at the end of the day.
Cameron dominated the rebounding battle 38 to 23 and shot the ball from the field at 47.9% (23-48) while Kingsville went 36.2% (21-58) on their end of the court. The Javelinas controlled the ball well with only two turnovers while CU had 13 on Wednesday night; TAMUK would convert 14 points off of Aggie turnovers.
Last time out for the Rams: The Angelo State men's basketball team fell 78-68 to Midwestern State on Wednesday.
The Rams were outscored 28-20 in the paint by the Mustangs and MSU made 81% free throws compared to 59% for ASU. Midwestern State hit 50% of their shots including 58% in second half.
On this date...On February 22 the Aggies are 5-7 overall and they have faced Angelo State once in 1992 falling 80-76 in Lawton.
A win for Cameron would mean...winning their third conference game in a row and tieing with the Rams in the LSC standings at 6-7 overall.
A win for Angelo State would mean...creating a two game lead on the Aggies in the LSC standings and sweeping the regular season series.
Coming Up: Cameron will have one regular season game remaining on March 1st at 6 pm hosting Midwestern State for homecoming.
