Jonathan Patino matched a career high 14 points but the Cameron men's basketball team would fall to #2 Tarleton State 75-74 in overtime.
The loss for the Aggies (9-11, 3-6 LSC) is their sixth in a row and third overtime loss this season.
"We held one of the top scoring teams in the country to 63 points in regulation," said head coach
Nate Gamet,"We did a great job executing what we needed to do. We just need to continue to keep pushing through and get better."
Craig Foster was an assist off of a double-double with nine and 13 points.
"Craig's just doing what he needs to do," said Gamet. "He does a good job finding people and getting them involved."
The Aggies won the rebounding battle 29 to 24 and shot 50% from the field (27-54), TSU went 47.8% (24-54) on their end of the court.
Tarleton State (19-1, 8-1 LSC) was led by De'Andre Upchurch who put up 24 points.
Cameron opened the game with a 9-2 lead before Tarleton State climbed out of the hole and tied the game at 16 with 8:30 left on the clock. Despite the tie, the Aggies remained out in front of the Texans and took a slim 33-32 lead at halftime.
Both teams exchanged leads out of the locker room before CU went ahead and broke a 49-49 tie with seven unanswered points with 7:20 left in the regulation. Tarleton State wasn't done though and scored seven unanswered on their end of the court to get within one point (59-58) of Cameron with five minutes to go.
Scoring became a premium in the closing minutes and the Texans went out in front 63-61 after TSU's De'Andre Upchurch sank a bucket and was fouled to convert the old fashion three-point play. In the next possession, Foster was fouled and sent to line with 10 seconds to go; he would convert both shots to send the game to overtime.
The Texans jumped out in front in overtime with a bucket before the score would tie twice. Tarleton State's Mohammand Lee sank a bucket and was fouled in the process of making the shot; he would make the free-throw to give TSU a 71-69 lead.
Both teams traded three-pointers and
Tank Mayberry got a layup to tie the game at 74 with 38 seconds left. In the next possession TSU's Chuck Guy was fouled with two seconds left and put up the go ahead free-throw to win the game.
The Aggies will remain at home to host Eastern New Mexico on Wednesday at 8 pm.
