WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Despite a near perfect match from
Rebecca Green, the Aggies fell in a back and forth five set match to Red River rival Midwestern State, winning sets two and four 25-21 and 25-13 but losing sets one, three, and five 25-15, 25-20, and 15-11. The loss drops CU to 5-6 overall and 1-5 in the Lone Star Conference.
Cameron and MSU were almost even in hitting percentage (.178 and .173) but the Mustangs had seven less errors than the Aggies and won the battle at the net, recording 12 team blocks, while CU only totaled four. Â
The Aggies fell behind early in the first set as the Mustangs jumped out to an 11-1 lead. A couple more big runs by MSU led them to the 25-15 first set victory. However, the Aggies came back firing in the second set with an 8-1 run to give them a big lead which they would hold, even when MSU rallied late, to give them the 25-21 win to tie the match at 1-1.
Midwestern State took back the momentum in the third set, thanks to another big early lead, they held of the Aggies to get the set win 25-20, and take the match lead 2-1. However, Cameron showed resilience and after falling behind 3-0, surged back and dominated set four 25-13, while only committing one attack error in the set.
Unlike the first four sets where one team had a distinct advantage, set five was back and forth with MSU taking an early lead, but then giving back the lead to the Aggies after
Kat Evans broke a 9-9 tie with a kill. An error by MSU gave CU an 11-9 lead, but the Mustangs Nicole Marzik powered a 6-0 run that gave MSU the fifth set win 15-11. Â
Green led the offensive attack with one of the best offensive games by an Aggie since 2011, recording 21 kills with only one error on 38 attacks for a .526 attack percentage. Green also recorded eight digs and two blocks.
Kendra Adams had a career night, throwing down 11 kills on only three errors. Both
Kat Evans and
Shannon DuLaney recorded double-doubles, with Evans recording 12 kills and 11 digs and DuLaney adding 10 kills and 16 digs. Evans also added three blocks to the CU effort.
Kayla Hebert also had a double-double, leading the team with 49 assists and adding 23 digs, while
Taylor Tepfer was also had double digit digs with 11.
Cameron will return to the court when they head to Russellville, Ark. for back to back games against Arkansas Tech and Williams Baptist College (Ark.) on Sept. 30 starting at noon.
Post-Match NotesThe loss means that an Aggie team has not beaten Midwestern State since the 2007 season.
