Cameron men fall in heartbreaker to West Texas A&M

CANYON, Texas – The Aggies lose in the final seconds against West Texas A&M, 83-82 in their first road conference game of the season. The loss moves Cameron to 9-5 and 1-1 in Lone Star Conference play, while the Buffs are now 10-5 with a 1-1 LSC mark as well.

After trailing out of the gates, Cameron scored 10 unanswered to take a 12-6 lead on the Buffs in the first four minutes.   However, West Texas A&M battled back and retook the advantage, 15-14, three minutes later off of a three-pointer.  Cameron continued to trail the Buffs for nearly the rest of the half but Cameron Lee gave the Aggies a boost with a jumper and their first three-pointer of the game with three minutes left; an 11-2 run put CU back out in front by three, 35-32 a minute later.   But the Aggie momentum stopped there WT closed out the half with an 8-2 run to lead 40-36 at the intermission.

Cameron shot 59.3 percent from the field but they were shut down everywhere else on the court with 1-6 shooting at the arc, and three buckets at the charity stripe.  West Texas A&M closed out the half with 40.6 percent shooting, seven three-pointers, and seven points at the stripe. Deondre Ray led the team with nine points at the half, while Matthew Don had eight.

The two teams traded buckets to open up the second half, until the Aggies regained the lead, 47-45 with three straight layups, but WT fired back with two straight three pointers to retake the lead, 55-47.  An 8-4 run put WT up by nine with 11 minutes left in the game. In the next few minutes, each made some clutch buckets, which kept the deficit between seven and nine, before four straight points by WT's Tez Dumars put the Buffs up by 11 with a little over six minutes left.

The Aggies surged back, getting a tip-in from Ray, and lay-up from Lee, a couple of free throws from Tank Mayberry and a three from DJ Jackson to cut the lead to two with a little under four minutes left. After a couple of baskets from WT, the Aggies got three straight free throws, putting the game at 76-73 with 1:18 left in the game. After a clutch stop on defense, Ray hit a three pointer to tie up the game at 76, but the Buffs came right back with a three of their own. After a made free throw by CU, they found themselves down two with 30 seconds left and had to foul.  WT made both of their free throws, putting them up 81-77. After a timeout, Don grabbed an offensive rebound and laid it in with twelve seconds left with the score at 81-79. WT was unable to get the pass in after the made shot and turned the ball over. With seven seconds left Lee drew a foul on a three point attempt, went to the line, and hit all three free throws, putting the Aggies up one. The Buffs then drove the length of the court and Antjuan Ball hit the game winning layup.

As a team, Cameron was 52.5 percent from the field, but only 25 percent from the three point line and 65 percent from the free throw line. WT was 46.7 percent from the field, 52 percent from the three point line, and 68.4 percent from the charity stripe. The Aggies controlled the glass 45-26, but turned the ball over six more times the Buffs.

Ray led the Aggies with 19 points and had six rebounds, while Don recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Additionally, Lee scored 16 points and Jamaal Brantley had 13.

Dumars led West Texas with 23 points, while three others were in double figures.
