COMMERCE, Texas – The Aggies held off a late charge by Texas A&M-Commerce but earned a 65-64 win on the road off of career nights from
Charron Montgomery and
DJ Vallier. With the victory at Commerce, Cameron who is currently playing three games in the next four days will go to 5-7 and 2-1 in LSC play, the Lions will fall to 7-6 and 2-2 in the LSC.
Montgomery came up with a game high 18 points, besting her career mark by four and Vallier pulled down 10 boards, with seven points, and a career high six blocks. Vallier's six blocks is the highest for an Aggie since Sabelle Diata had seven on Jan. 18, 2012 at Midwestern State.
Cristina Soriano had a career high seven rebounds and matched her high for assists with seven; she also would add eight points. Both
Brandi Leal and
Jazzmine Robinson came in with nine points each for the Aggies.
Cameron shot 52.3 percent from the field, bettering the Lions who went 36.1 percent on their side of the court. Second chance points and Aggie turnovers helped Texas A&M-Commerce stay in the game with 23 points coming of 20 offensive A&M-C boards and 24 points off of 24 CU turnovers.
The Lions controlled the early stages of the first half and holding onto a six point advantage over the Aggies. At the midway marker, back-to-back buckets from
Sasha Carter pushed CU ahead 18-16 with 9:43 remaining and the Aggies stayed in front into the intermission with a three point, 32-29 lead. Montgomery went a perfect 4-for-4 from the field and paced CU with eight points and Vallier had seven points along with seven rebounds. Turnovers plagued the Aggies early with 12 and the Lions took advantage with 16 points off of miscues.
Cameron came out hot to start off the second half and opened up a 12 point, 43-31 advantage on Texas A&M-Commerce 4:30 minutes into the half. However, the Lions clawed back at the Aggies and managed to get within a point, 60-59, with 2:44 remaining. The nip-and-tuck game continued down to the wire and Texas A&M-Commerce took their first lead, 64-63, since the early stages of the ballgame with 1:15 to go off of a jumper. In the next possession, Montgomery gave CU a go-ahead bucket with 59 seconds left.
The Lions missed a bucket on their end of the court and Leal missed a three-pointer with 10 seconds left and Texas A&M-Commerce grabbed the rebound to have a chance for a game winner on their side of the court. After back-to-back timeouts, the Lions managed to get the ball off with two seconds left but it would miss, giving the Aggies tight one point win.
Cameron will have a quick turnaround and on Thursday they will visit Texas Woman's University.
