LAWTON – Cameron used a 15 point run in the second half to guide themselves a 78-71 win against Texas A&M-Kingsville on Wednesday night to snap a three game skid. With the win Cameron will move to 10-7 overall and 2-3 in the Lone Star Conference, Texas A&M-Kingsville will drop down to 6-11 and 1-4 in league play.
"Every game in this league is tough. Kingsville's coach does a great job and we recruited his kids when he was at a junior college," said head coach Nate Gamet. "He does a great job with them, they play hard, they are fundamental, and they execute what they are supposed to. So we knew this one would be a grind for us, but this one was huge for us."
"We started making better decisions...we moved the ball really well, and when you do that you create advantages on the offensive end and you're not going through the teeth of their defense every possession."Deondre Ray paced the Aggies with a 20 point effort and he would also come away with a team high seven rebounds.
Bruce Barron had his highest scoring effort since the second game of the season with 14 points,
Jamaal Brantley got 13, and
Desmond Henry chipped in 12.
DJ Jackson came off the CU bench and led the offense with seven assists, which was his best night since he dished out a career high 11 on Dec. 20 against Dallas Christian.
Tank Mayberry came off the bench with eight minutes played but he would rack up six boards and a block to help CU in the closing minutes.
Cameron outshot Texas A&M-Kingsville 47.2 percent to 36.4 percent but 31 points off of turnovers and second chance offerings helped keep the numbers closer; rebounding was won by Cameron with 36, three more than Kingsville.
The Javelinas had four in double-figures with DJ Weathers coming away with 15 points.
The first ten minutes were controlled by the Aggies after opening up a 17-7 lead on Texas A&M-Kingsville. However, the pendulum back TAMUK's way and they closed the gap to a possession in the closing minutes. Kingsville would get the last laugh and knocked down a three ball to take a slim 31-30 advantage at the half. Cameron would shoot 50 percent from the field but 12 points off of CU turnovers by the Javelinas aided their first half effort.
After trading points for the opening minutes in the second half, Cameron went from trailing 38-37 at the 16:35 marker and dominated the next five minutes in all aspects with 15 unanswered points. But Texas A&M-Kingsville would provide Cameron a small scare in the closing minutes and managed to get within two possessions in the final minute but CU free throws would ice the contest in favor of the Aggies.
Cameron will travel on Saturday to San Angelo, Texas to face number-11 Angelo State at 6 p.m.
