Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Aggies win fifth straight with 80-69 victory over ASU

SAN ANGELO – Brandi Leal hit six three pointers for the second straight game to lead the Aggies to an 80-69 win over Angelo State in San Angelo, Texas Saturday afternoon. The win extends Cameron's win streak to five straight and improves their record to 9-7 overall and 6-1 in Lone Star Conference Play.

The five game win streak is the best stretch an Aggie team has had since the 2011-12 season when they won 10 in a row. The win also helps retain a half game lead in the LSC standings over West Texas A&M.

Cameron finished the game shooting an even 50 percent from the field, hitting 8-17 from behind the arc and 18-25 from the free throw line. They were out-rebounded 41-39 and had more turnovers, but not once trailed in the game.

Leal led CU with 18 points, going 6-11 from deep, and adding three assists, while LSC leading scorer, Jazzmine Robinson added 17 points, six rebounds, and two steals. Also in double figures for Cameron were Cristina Soriano and Charron Montgomery who both had 11 points, while Montgomery led the team with seven helpers. The Aggies had eight players with at least one score.

The Aggies held Angelo State to shooting just 34.8 percent from the field and 22.2 percent from deep. Diamalises Rivera led them with 23 points while Amanda Weaver added 22. The loss moves ASU to 5-12 overall and 0-7 in conference play.

Cameron started out the first half on fire, jumping out to a couple of seven point leads early, only to have Angelo State cut them down to three. After a jumper by ASU to put the lead at 21-18 in favor of the Aggies with eight minutes left, the Aggies went on an 11-0 run to extend their lead.  The two teams traded buckets back in forth to close out the first half with CU on top 36-28.

The Aggies shot 53.6 percent from the field in the first half, going 44.4 percent from the three point line and 66.7 percent from the charity stripe. Both Leal and Jasmine Robinson led the team into the break with nine points apiece.

In the second half, the Aggies came out with the same fire they had in the first, hitting their first three shots of the half. ASU cut the lead to just five points minutes into the second half, but a barrage of three pointers from Cameron would help them maintain their lead and extend it to 11 with eight minutes left in the contest. After trading scores, the Rambelles were able to cut the lead back down to five with a little over five minutes left, but a couple of CU free throws and a jumper from Sasha Carter extend the lead back up to nine. The Ags and Belles went back in forth in the next two minutes, which led the ASU having to start fouling. Cameron went 11-14 from the free throw line in the final minutes of the game to get the 80-69 win.

Cameron will have a week off before the head back home to host their cross-border rivals Midwestern State on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 2 p.m.
