LAWTON – Cameron started hot and never looked back dominating Eastern New Mexico to a 98-71 victory on Wednesday night in the Aggie Gym for their fifth win in a row. The Aggies are now 9-4 overall and 1-0 in Lone Star Conference play, while the Greyhounds are 7-7 and 0-1 in league action.
The scoring outburst by CU was their highest in a LSC contest since Jan. 5, 2008 at Abilene Christian matching Cameron's total that night. Additionally, the Aggies have not trailed in a contest for the last 115 minutes and 47 seconds with Dallas Christian on Dec. 20, 2014 holding a one point advantage on CU.
Cameron had five in double-figures with
Desmond Henry leading the way with 20 points;
Jamaal Brantley had 18,
DJ Jackson knocked down 17 and went a perfect 4 for 4 at the arc.
Deondre Ray added to CU's total with 16 and
KeDorian Sullivan chipped in 11 for the night.
Henry was CU's leading rebounder with six with Brantley and
Tank Mayberry having five each; Mayberry also came up with four blocks on ENMU.
Cameron continued to show their marksmanship on the floor with 59 percent shooting on the floor, and making 10 three pointers. In the rebounding battle, CU pulled down 39 boards besting Eastern New Mexico by eight.
"The first half was probably the best half we have had this season," said head coach Nate Gamet. "Offensively, I think we only took one or two shots that I would consider bad shots, and the rest of them were good looks. We shared the ball really well again and that is really good to see.""We challenged our guys at half time to stay focused and sharp and beat them in the second half. Intensity is going to fall when you are up like that but we got a lot of young guys in there to give them a taste of the Lone Star speed and size."The Aggies took care of business early and held the Greyhounds to under 10 points for the first 13:30 of the contest; in the meantime Cameron had opened a 32-10 lead. CU shot a blazing 60 percent on the floor and went to the locker room leading 49-21, with Henry having 16 points and Ray netting 13 points; ENMU went 20 percent on their end and failed to hit a shot from beyond the arc.
Cameron continued to put pedal to the floorboard on ENMU and managed to open up a 38 point lead within the first three minutes of the second half. The Aggies also continued to shoot a hot hand and rattled down 58.1 percent of their shots on the Greyhounds who did rebound with 50 points in the second half, outscoring CU by one.
The Greyhounds would shoot 31.9 percent on their side of the floor with Chris Wyms having a game high 27 points.
The Aggies will hit the road to face West Texas A&M on Saturday at 4 p.m.
"WT is going to be talented, they always are," added Gamet. "They have players that really good last year and they are going to be tough, as is most of the teams in the Lone Star. We gotta lace them up and get after it."
