CANYON, Texas– Cameron's road woes continue as they would fall 3-1, (15-25, 18-25, 25-21, 18-25), at West Texas A&M Saturday afternoon. After beginning the season at 13-0, the Aggies have dropped their fifth straight match, moving to 13-5 overall and 4-5 in Lone Star Conference play.
Cameron had two players achieve a double-double on the match. Senior
Kat Evans led the Aggies in kills with 17 and had ten digs to grab her tenth double-double on the year. Freshman
Tori Luckenbill achieved her sixth career double-double after contributing 39 assists and 11 digs.
West Texas A&M ended the match with 65 digs, 58 kills and a .329 attacking percentage, while Cameron had 59 digs, 52 kills and a .157 hitting clip overall. The Lady Buffs also achieved 11 blocks versus the Aggies' three.
Errors plagued Cameron in the first set. The set knotted for a fifth and final time at eight before West Texas A&M went on a four point run off two Lady Buff kills and two CU attack errors. Cameron would get in two more kills from
Jenna Gillean before WTAMU went on a six point run that featured four straight Aggie errors. The Lady Buffs took set one, 15-25. WTAMU held CU to a .062 attacking percentage, while the Lady Buffs had a .565 hitting clip.
Set two began similarly off a 3-3 tie as Cameron committed three straight errors to give WTAMU a 3-6 lead. The Lady Buffs held a four point lead until Cameron narrowed it to one (10-11) following kills from CU's
Kayla Allen and
Kat Evans. Both sides traded kills and errors until WTAMU's Elisa Bentsen put down back-to-back kills for the edge. Cameron remained behind and lost the second set, 18-25.
Set three proved to be a thriller with ten ties and three lead changes. Cameron remained down in the beginning stretch until a WTAMU attack error was followed up by a kill from Aggie
Madison Elwood to knot the set at six. The set tied twice more until
Jordan Williams awarded the Aggies an ace for their first lead of the set.
However, WTAMU took the lead back (9-10) with back-to-back kills. The set tied four more times, and the Lady Buffs remained ahead, but two straight kills by Gillean gave CU the lead. Two more ties occurred at 15 and 16, but two Lady Buff attack errors put CU up by two. The Aggies remained ahead and closed out the set, 25-21, to stay alive backed by strong offense from Evans and Allen.
The Aggies stayed behind at the start of the fourth set until two straight kills and an ace from Williams tied the score at six. The Lady Buffs would stay out of reach as their offense overpowered CU, awarding them the set, (18-25) and match propelled by 18 kills and a .441 hitting clip.
West Texas A&M was led by freshman Courtney Curl who ended thee match with 17 kills and a .395 attacking percentage.
Cameron volleyball returns to Aggie Gym at 2 p.m. on Oct. 24 for a LSC match with Texas A&M—Kingsville.
