OKLAHOMA CITY – Despite steady shooting all night, turnovers spoiled Cameron on Friday night as they would fall to Newman 81-79 in Oklahoma Christian's Heartland-Lone Star Conference Challenge.
Cameron (0-1) took nearly every statistical category but doubled Newman's 11 turnovers. The hurt for CU came in the second half where they committed 13 and the Jets used that to score 16 points to open the door to a 17 point comeback.
The Aggies shot 54.8% from the field (34-62) and were led by senior
Jamaal Brantley who hit a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds.
Deondre Ray put up 17 points and
JV Long after missing two seasons from injuries got his first career start and had 13 points and eight rebounds.
Newman had four in double-figures with James Pegues having 20; Jalen Love scored 19, with Gavin Thurman and Jarvis Williams both hitting double-digits. As a team, Newman shot 40.6% (28-69) from the field.
The Jets pecked away 13 steals, which was eight more than the Aggies. In the rebounding battle, CU had 47, while NU came up with 30.
Things looked good for the Aggies after the first half where they went to the looker room with a 48-34 lead. However, the Jets owned the final 20 minutes and with an old fashioned three-point play from NU's Love five minutes into the half put them within eight points (58-50).
Cameron kept it at least a three possession game until the Jets went on an 8-0 run to take a 69-68 lead with 4:56 left on the clock. After that it was anyone's game and a jumper from Brantley with 1:48 left gave the Aggies their final lead of the night, 74-73. Newman a minute later pulled themselves ahead one last time off of a three-pointer.
The Aggies played the fouling game to extend the contest and a three-pointer from
Delvonte Pierre with four second left gave CU a chance now trailing 80-79. After a CU foul, Newman hit one of the two free throws with a second left but the Aggies didn't have time to run a play to open their season with a loss for the first time in seven seasons.
Cameron will need to have a short memory and they will turn around to face Oklahoma Christian on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
