LAWTON – A strong fourth quarter by the Aggie women paved the way to a 63-49 over East Central on Saturday night in non-conference play. Cameron held the Tigers to five points in the final 10 minutes with
Dayla Threatt leading the Aggies with 15 points.
Despite the finish, Cameron battled back from some inconstant play in the first half and trailed as many as seven points to Tigers in the second quarter.
"The first half we struggled getting into a flow," said head coach
Tom Webb. "We were just trying to figure everything out, they sat in the lane a lot, couldn't get the ball where want, and the pace started to pick up for us."
Cameron did pick up the pace up and shot 48.9 (23-47) from the field and 31.6% (6-19) from the arc. The offensive attack for the Aggies spread out across 11 players with newcomer
Brittany Hill scoring 10 and
Charron Montgomery getting nine.
"I don't think going into a night we know who is going to be our leading scorer and that's the beauty of our team," added Webb. "It could be any given kid on any given night and we have multiple kids who can score ten or more and that's already being shown this year."
East Central didn't shoot well as the night ended and they went 30.4% (17-56) from the field and 25.9% (7-27) from downtown. However, the Tigers beat the Aggies in rebounding 35 to 31; they would also pick up 17 offensive boards but ECU would only have three second chance points.
Bench points were dominated by CU with 39 to the Tigers' one.
East Central (0-1) had three hit double-figures with Tia Williams picking up a team high 14 points, with Whitney Stotler and Alexa Adair both having 13 each.
With the win the Aggies are 2-0 for only the second time in the last ten seasons and they will face a tough road trip on Tuesday to top-ranked Emporia State at 5:30 p.m.
"It's a great opportunity to play in an environment that's going to be fun to play at and face a team that is really talented to see where we stack up," said Webb.
