Buzzer-beater spoils Aggies afternoon

LAWTON – Cameron overcame an 11 point deficit to overtake UA-Fort Smith in the second half but the Lady Lions would knock a buzzer-beater to best the Aggies 58-56 on Saturday afternoon in the Aggie Gym.   Brandi Leal knocked down four three-point shots and led CU with 15 points while the team held the Lady Lions to a season low 31% on the floor.

Charron Montgomery had 14 points and Cristina Soriano picked up 12 as CU others hitting double-figures.  Dayla Threatt scored four points but had a team high seven boards in the loss.

"We had plenty of missed opportunities this afternoon and didn't get the result we wanted at the end of the day," said head coach Tom Webb.  "They (UAFS) are a really good team and we held them to season lows shooting wise and we came back from 11 down which was good but it is always tough to lose in a buzzer beater."

The Lady Lions (6-1) opened with an early six point lead until Leal knocked down back-to-back treys to even the score at the 6:25 mark.  Cameron (4-2) picked up the pace and pulled ahead of UA-Fort Smith 14-10 after a Brittany Hill jumper but the
Lions would score five points unanswered to retake the lead.  Leal put CU in front 17-15 with her third trey of the quarter but a UAFS layup would even the game at 17 at the end of the first 10 minutes.

The second period was all UAFS as the Aggies went nearly eight minutes without hitting a bucket and opened up a 30-19 advantage.   A Cristina Soriano bucket and a Leal three pointer were CU's two made shots of the quarter as CU would go 2-for-11 and trail 32-24 at the half.  The Lady Lions didn't shoot the ball well either and went 7-for-26 in quarter.

Cameron came out steady in the second half and used a 12 point run to rally past a 43-34 UAFS lead.  The Aggies maintained their advantage and a Leal jumper with 1:33 left in the third quarter gave CU a 48-44 lead; a pair of Lady Lion free-throws would cut down the Aggie advantage to a pair heading into the final 10 minutes.

The Aggies continued to keep the lead until but they would go scoreless in the final four minutes and the Lady Lions took advantage to tie the game at 56 each with one minute to go.  Both teams would miss shots but CU would have possession of the ball with 27 seconds left and no shot clock with an opportunity for the win.  However, CU would commit a turnover with nine seconds left and gave UAFS enough time to beat the clock to win the game with a ten foot jumper right of the basket.

Cameron shot 18-for-54 from the field went 15-for-17 at the charity stripe, while UAFS shot 22-for-71 on their side of the court and the made a season low four treys.  In rebounding, CU trailed 52 to 37 with the Lady Lions picking up eight extra second chance points.

Jasmine Brainard led the Lady Lions with 18 points.

Cameron will be off until Dec. 12, where they will travel to Weatherford to face Southwestern Oklahoma.
