Big fourth inning guides CU to 9-5 win over Colorado Mesa

CANYON, Texas – A five run fourth inning guided Cameron to a 9-5 victory against Colorado Mesa in game number-two of the West Texas Woodward Invitational on Friday evening.  The win handed the Aggies a split with them getting three-hit in the afternoon against Metropolitan State of Denver 5-0.

Despite the limited hitting earlier against MSU-Denver, the Aggies collected 12 with Breezy McComas, Tara Martini, and Lauren Renneker all punching in two hits.  Martini opened the fifth with her 20th career homer and Paige Daino smashed her third homer of the week and tenth career shot to score two in the sixth inning.

Sonora Zukerman went 5 2/3 innings inside the circle with five strike outs and five runs given up (four earned) for her second win of the season.  Kelsey Watson closed out the contest by recording the final four outs and earned her second save.

Colorado Mesa took advantage of a CU defense error in the opening frame to score a pair and it would be five run fourth inning where McComas tied the game with a two RBI single down the left field line.   Emily Nix later drove in the go ahead run off a single, Carly Allerheiligen added one more RBI of a Mesa error, and Chelsea DeLong gave CU their fifth run off another single.

The Aggies would tack on two insurance runs in the fifth of a Martini solo shot, and two more off a Daino blast to right center in the sixth.

Cameron's win moves them to 3-1 overall and Colorado Mesa will fall to 4-4.

Cameron has four games remaining in Canyon with two on Saturday and Sunday; they will face CSU-Pueblo at 11:30 a.m. and Adams State at 1:30 p.m.
