Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Aggie women roll past Texas A&M-Kingsville 78-65

KINGSVILLE, Texas – Cameron took care of business early and led for nearly the whole contest in a 78-65 win at Texas A&M-Kingsville on Wednesday night. With the victory the Aggies can finish no worse than third in the Lone Star Conference with two regular season contests to go.

Additionally, with a Midwestern State loss to Angelo State at San Angelo the Aggies now hold a one game lead for second place.

Cameron will move to 14-9 overall and 11-3 in the LSC while Texas A&M-Kingsville will remain winless in 24 attempts this season.

The victory for the Aggies also matched their program best in the LSC with 11 last set in the 2011-12 season.  However, that Aggie group needed 20 games to reach that millstone, the present Cameron group did it in 14.  Cameron also clinched their first winning record (7-5) on the road something the program hasn't accomplished in 10 seasons.

Brandi Leal and Jade Herl spurred the offensive power for the Aggies with six three-pointers each and 18 points, both were one short of tying the program high.  Jazzmine Robinson provided 12 points but spread the ball around with eight assists, and seven rebounds.  Markita Zeigler had a career night with 12 points and she also added five boards.  On the defensive end DJ Vallier gave the Aggies six rebounds and four blocks.

Both teams shot the ball decently with Cameron coming in at 49.1 percent and Texas A&M-Kingsville shooting 46.7 percent.  Key differences were CU's 13 three pointers and 23 points off of turnovers, Kingsville could only counter with five triples and 10 points off Aggie miscues.  The rebounding battle was edged by Cameron with 32, which two more than Texas A&M-Kingsville.

Neither team saw many chances at the charity stripe with 15 combined by both teams, the Aggies would commit only eight fouls, which was their lowest total since Jan. 31, 2009 at Central Oklahoma.

The contest remained close for the first eight minutes but an 11 point run by the Aggies in the next three minutes would hand Cameron a 25-14 lead.  From the rest of the way the
Aggies would never let loose of a double-digit lead and their largest lead would come in at 26 points with 4:17 left in the first half.

With a regional ranking at six, the Aggies will look avoid an upset in Lawton on homecoming this Saturday, Feb 21 at 4 p.m. against Angelo State.
