Big first half hands Aggies a 79-54 win over Angelo State

LAWTON – Cameron closed out their home schedule with a convincing 79-54 victory over Angelo State on Saturday evening.  The Aggies opened with the lead and never looked back for their program best twelfth Lone Star Conference win of the season.

"I'm proud of the whole group," said head coach Tom Webb. "They wanted this for the seniors more than anything, and I think that shows who we are. We are a team, and it's not about one person. But tonight it was about four people, and we took care of it. I am very pleased and proud for those four."

With the win by Cameron and a Midwestern State win over Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday, both teams will playing for the number-2 seed in the LSC Tournament.  Despite a one game lead, should the Aggies fall and both teams tie in the league standings, Midwestern State will be awarded the number-2 season based of the head-to-head record.

Brandi Leal paced the Aggies with 18 points, all from the arc, while Jazzmine Robinson, DJ Vallier, and Markita Zeigler all had 12 points each.  Robinson added seven assists, six rebounds, and three steals; Cristina Soriano had a team high seven boards.

Cameron shot the ball at 52.5 percent from the field, while Angelo State shot 30.8 percent.   Nearly half of the Aggies points came from inside the paint with 40.  The Aggies also controlled the rebounding battle with 40, 12 more than the Rambelles. Shauna Coleman was the lone ASU player in double-figures with 16 points.

The ball bounced the Aggies way early and they opened the contest with a 10-2 run on the Rambelles.   Success continued to fall Cameron's way off the backing of Leal who mowed down five three pointers to lead the Aggies at the intermission with 18 points.    All the momentum pointed toward the Aggies way with a 13-0 run toward the end of the half and Sasha Carter capped off the hot scoring with a heads up jumper at the buzzer to give CU a 20 point, 46-26 advantage heading into the locker room.

"We talked about attacking, and they did a good job of that. They came out confident... That's just some credit to the seniors. We had four seniors on the floor to start the game, and they were aggressive, so that was good."

Cameron would shoot 56.7 percent from the field while ASU went 29.2 percent on their side of the floor.

In the second half, the Aggies never let off of their double-figure lead and their largest advantage would be the spread of the final score, 25 points.

After opening the season 1-6 overall, the Aggies are now 15-9 and 12-3 in the LSC; Angelo State is now 8-17 and 3-12 in league play.

Cameron's showdown with Midwestern State for the number-2 seed in the LSC Tournament will be on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 4 p.m.

"We will approach this next game just like we have everything else. Just take it one day at a time. We will practice on Tuesday, and figure it out from there. I'm not going to worry about who we play next or what's going on next. We are just going to figure it out little by little."
