STEPHENVILLE, Texas – For the first time this season the Cameron men's basketball team will fall below .500 after an 87-73 loss to number-12 Tarleton State on Saturday night. The Aggies have dropped seven of their last eight to fall to 10-11 overall and are now 2-7 against the Lone Star Conference.Â
The stretch for Aggies has not come easy with six of their last seven contests coming against nationally ranked programs.
Jamaal Brantley paced CU in scoring with 19, his best offensive night since Dec. 20 this season against Dallas Christian (25 points); he would nearly account for one-third of CU's boards with a team high seven. Both
Desmond Henry and
KeDorian Sullivan had 15 points.
The Aggies didn't have many answers for Tarleton State at the arc with 12 made treys, compared to Cameron's five.
Cameron shot 52.3 percent from the field but had a season matching low with 22 rebounds, the Texans shot slightly better at 53.5 percent and seven more boards.
Like their meeting in Lawton earlier this season it was a physical ballgame with 48 personal fouls. Both teams combined for 63 attempts at the charity stripe with TSU scoring 29, and CU adding 22 to their point total; the contest in Lawton featured 58 fouls and 74 shots at the line.
Cameron opened the ballgame on a tear with seven unanswered points but Tarleton State quickly bounced back to tie the game at 11 each 4:30 minutes in the contest.  The Aggies though, remained out in front but after a tie at 23 each with 8:29 left the Aggies would go through a 12-2 Tarleton State run that was aided by four CU turnovers. Tarleton would snatch a 34-25 lead on the Aggies with 4:23 remaining but Cameron closed the gap once again and got within four with a minute left in the half.  The Texans however, would score four uncontested to take a 45-36 advantage into the break.
In the second half, Tarleton continued to stretch their lead on the Aggies and by the 10:33 mark they would be up by 23 points. Cameron would cut down the TSU lead back down to 11 after a
Zac Tabor three pointer but it would come with 1:14 left in the ballgame. Tarleton would score three more points, all from the stripe, to defeat the Aggies by 14.
Mo Lee led Tarleton (20-2, 7-2 LSC) with 24 points, three others were in double-figures TSU.
Cameron will remain on the road to face Eastern New Mexico on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m.
