#25 Cameron unable to hold off #2 Lady Buffs and drop doubleheader

LAWTON – Friday was all about the pitching and Saturday it was all hitting, but number-25 Cameron could not keep pace with number-2 West Texas A&M falling 11-7 in game one and 13-5 in the final contest of the series.   With the two wins against the Aggies, the Lady Buffs won the series by taking the final three games.

Tara Martini homered in both games, bringing her season total to 14; she would also drive in five RBI overall and needs by more to by Cameron's new career leader.

However, WT countered with nine homers in the two games and tacked on eight runs on CU starter Kelsey Watson in game one.  Watson (12-2) would fall for the first time in her last 10 starts in four innings of work.  Katelyn Craker went two innings of relief and issued three runs, Betsy Woodall pitched a clean seventh inning with a strikeout.

Cameron opened the doubleheader with a three run second inning but WT countered with four runs in the third and fourth to put some distance from CU.   The Lady Buffs went up 11-5 into the seventh but Martini smashed a two out, two RBI homer for the Aggies final runs of the game.

In the night cap, WT struck first with a two run homer in the opening frame.  Cameron managed to get an unearned run in the second before the Lady Buffs knocked out another two run homer in the third.

The Aggies didn't quit though and in the bottom half of the inning CU took advantage of a WT error to push across three more unearned runs to tie the game at four.

Things would come undone for the Aggies in the seventh and West Texas hit a grand slam and scored three more runs to go up 11-4; they would add two more in the fifth off another two runs off a homer.  Martini homered in the bottom half of the inning but the game would end with the eight run rule.

Sonora Zukerman (8-2) went 3 1/3 innings with seven earned runs, Watson came in during the fourth and recorded the final five outs with six runs given up.

With the series loss, Cameron will go to 25-6 and 8-4 in the Lone Star Conference; West Texas A&M will go to 27-6 and 13-3 in league play.

Cameron will return to action and face number-19 Central Oklahoma for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Tuesday.
