Men's Basketball Preview: Midwestern State

Midwestern State (21-7): Mar. 5 at 2:30 p.m. | Live Stats | Game Notes

The Starting Five
1.    On BennettRank.com the Aggies have played the second toughest schedule in the nation at the NCAA Division II level; Cameron has played eight contests against ranked teams this season.
2     Aggie senior Desmond Henry has scored in 28 straight contests and is the only player to start in all 26 games this season.   Henry needs only two more points to be Cameron's 17th member of the 1,000 point club.
3.    CU has the second best field goal percentage in the LSC and 24th best in the nation (48.6%).
4.    Cameron Lee is leading the conference with a 47.1 percent success rate at the arc, and he is netting just over a pair of three-pointers a game.
5.    DJ Jackson has the 16th best assist-to-turnover ratio in the nation (2.91).

Cameron in the Postseason: This will be postseason appearance number-32 and for the second year in a row the Aggies are the number-six seed in the LSC Championships in Allen, Texas.  Last season in the 3 vs. 6 match up, the Aggies were paired against Angelo State and Cameron rallied back from a 15 point second half deficit only to fall 64-59 in the opening round.   Since 1990, Cameron is 3-11 with their last win coming in 2012 against Incarnate Word.  The Aggies have yet to make in the tournament finals in program history.

This is Cameron eleventh overall, fourth straight LSC Tournament appearance, and sixth since 2009.  The Aggies have faced every present league school in the tournament field except for Tarleton State and Texas A&M Kingsville.  Cameron has played West Texas A&M the most (4 times), and twice against Texas A&M Commerce and Midwestern State.  Overall the Aggies are 1-3 inside the Allen Event Center.

LSC Honors: Fifth year senior Desmond Henry was named All-LSC Second Team following a season where he averaged 13.2 points per game.  The honor book ended a career where he was named in 2010 the LSC's  North Division Freshman of the Year.

Let's Play Two: Thursday's meeting will be the third time in program history that the Aggie and Mustangs have played back-to-back contests in 68 previous meetings.  In the back-to-back format MSU swept the doubleheader in 2012, while the Aggies forced a split in 2013.  Against the Mustangs in the LSC Tournament, the Aggies are 0-2 with their last meeting coming in 2012.  In the series history, Cameron trails 45-23 with the Aggies picking up one win in the last ten meetings with the Mustangs, and CU has dropped four in a row to MSU.

Xavier Blackburn is pacing MSU with just over six rebounds a game, and Trevor Fuller is second the LSC with 1.8 blocks a game.  As a team, the Mustangs are second best in the LSC in rebounding with 40.8 boards a contest.  At the charity stripe, MSU is last with their players hitting buckets 63.8 percent of the time.

Last Time Out Against The Mustangs: Cameron rallied back from a 28 point deficit but they could not overcome the Mustangs who won 73-67 this last Sunday night.  The finish came a long ways from the start for the Aggies after they went through the first 11 minutes without a bucket made.

Deondre Ray led the Ags with a game high 19 points and Jamaal Brantley added 18 to the teams scoring effort.  Matthew Don came away with seven points a game high eight rebounds, Cameron Lee knocked down three triples for nine points, and Tank Mayberry came up with eight.   Cameron won the rebounding battle with 44, which were 10 more than the Mustangs.  In shooting, Midwestern State took the edge 43 percent to 41 percent from the Aggies.   The Aggies committed 22 turnovers with MSU converting 29 points; Cameron had 23 points off of 15 Mustang miscues.

Coming Up: Should the Aggies beat the Mustangs they will play either Texas A&M-Kingsville or Angelo State on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
