ALLEN, Texas – Third time was a charm this season for the Cameron Aggie men's basketball team who would use a career high 23 points from
Cameron Lee to stun their rivals Midwestern State 87-84 in overtime at the Lone Star Conference Tournament on Thursday afternoon.Â
The win was Cameron's first against the Mustangs in the postseason and ended a four game streak that was in favor of MSU. Additionally, it was the Aggies first win in the league tournament in two seasons and fourth quarterfinal victory.
Lee used six three-pointers as the Ags would not take a lead in the contest until overtime. Â
Jamaal Brantley had followed up Lee's effort with 22 points and a career high 11 rebounds,
Deondre Ray came up with nine second half points and added 17 to the CU effort.  Additionally,
Tank Mayberry was a rebound short of a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.
"Just proud of the guys, we were able to hit shots, execute to get clean looks," said head coach
Nate Gamet. Â "You know if we drop five, ten percent, we're on the bad end of a bad game. So we were just able to execute, do what we do, so very proud of the guys that were able to hit enough shots and get enough key stops to win it."
"We played Midwestern the final game of the year, and it was the same situation. Down big at half and just kept fighting. We played through their physicality, and I thought we did a good job making some adjustments and our guys were just ballplayers, I mean being strong with the ball and then really doing a great job just executing down the stretch."
Fifth year senior
Desmond Henry also made history with two points, but it was enough to get him to 1,000 in his career at Cameron, and making him 17th player in program history to reach that milestone number.Â
The Aggies dominated both sides of the court with a 51.8 shooting percentage and on the defensive end they came up with five blocks and 10 steals, while holding MSU to 38.9 percent shooting.  Despite the final result, Midwestern State won the rebounding battle by 10 with 46 and the Aggies would commit 19 turnovers.
Cameron led for two minutes, all in overtime, despite trailing the Mustangs by 11 points with eight minutes left in regulation.   The Aggies responded back with six unanswered before MSU silenced CU with a three pointer with 4:51 left to give the Mustangs a 66-58 lead.    However, the Aggies snapped back with a three ball from Lee and layups by Brantley and Ray to get CU back by one with 2:18 left (68-67).   A MSU jumper moved the lead by up to three before Brantley hit a jumper while being fouled; he would hit add-one to tie the contest at 68 each.   The Mustangs would draw out a foul with 1:25 left to give them a two point lead that would hold until the final seconds where Lee knocked in a jumper down the baseline to send the contest to overtime.
The Mustangs opened the final five minutes with a three pointer but the Aggies whipped back around and scored seven unanswered which tipped the scales back CU's way for the final time.
Cameron (13-14) will go on and face Angelo State on Friday at 2:30 p.m. in the tournament semifinal.Â
