WICHITA FALLS – After waiting the series out for two days due to poor weather, the Cameron softball team managed to split day one at Midwestern State on Sunday evening. The Aggies blew a five run lead in the opener to fall 11-8 but didn't let that happen in game two by beating the Mustangs 10-2 in five innings.
With the win in game two, the Aggies have surpassed their season win total from one year ago and need three more to match the program high, 35 that was set in the 2008 season. The Aggies are 32-13 overall and 12-10 in the Lone Star Conference.
In game one, the Aggies allowed the Mustangs to score five runs in the fourth and fifth inning to fall 11-8.
Lauren Renneker opened the game with a two-run homer over the center field fence for her seventeenth of season. The Mustangs picked up a run in the bottom half of the inning and after a scoreless second; CU put four runs on the scoreboard off a
Sonora Zukerman sacrifice fly, a Carly Allerheiligen single, and two off a MSU error.
In the fourth, a throwing error by the Aggies off a sacrifice bunt with one out extended the inning to allow a run to score along with back-to-back homers to tie the contest at six each.
Cameron would retake the lead in the fifth with a Zukerman single and a run scoring off a fielder's choice to make it an 8-6 ballgame.
However, Midwestern State would load the bases with two outs and a double cleared them to give the Mustangs a one run lead in the bottom of the fifth. In the next at-bat they would homer to give them an 11-8 advantage.
Cameron threatened in the final inning by getting bases loaded with no outs but they would hit into an infield fly and strike out twice to end the game.
Kelsey Watson (15-5) was charged with the loss and she would give up seven earned runs and strike out only one.
Katelyn Craker finished the game for CU by recording the final four outs.
In the nightcap, a grand slam homer in the second inning by CU catcher
Chelsea DeLong set the bar for the Aggies and this time they never looked back at the Mustangs. The junior transfer from Cache had a season high five RBI in the contest.
Jessie Ingrum in her seventh start of the season had a pair of hits and drove in two runs in the third off a single up the middle. In limited action this season the junior has hit three homers and is batting .393 for the Aggies. Zukerman kept a hot bat going with her second homer for the week with a three run blast in the fourth inning; the home run was eighth of the year.
The blazing bat for the Aggies remained to be Renneker who has smashed three homers and has eight hits in the last four games; she would be perfect at the plate in the second game with three hits.
Craker (8-3) scattered 10 hits in five innings with three walks and three hits in the win.
The Mustangs despite being eighth in the South Central region are at risk of being eliminated from the LSC Tournament with an 8-14 record; they are 21-19 overall.
Both teams will come back and wrap up the series with a doubleheader on Monday, starting at 4 p.m.
