WICHITA FALLS – Cameron was an out away from winning the series at Midwestern State but instead they will split with CU winning game one 8-4 in eight innings and MSU taking the final game of the series 6-5.
With the split the Aggies are now 33-14 overall and with a 13-11 Lone Star Conference record they are in fifth place in standings. Â
Cameron nearly let go of the first game after taking a 4-1 lead over the Mustangs with one out in the seventh inning. Midwestern State managed to score three runs and put the winning run at third with one out before grounding out to end the inning.Â
Luckily for the Aggies they would get to play an extra inning and they managed to load the bases and Tara Martini singled in two runs, Lauren Renneker and Paige Daino both had RBI singles to put CU up 8-4.
This time around the Aggies would put Midwestern State down in order for the win.Â
Kelsey Watson (16-5) used 129 pitches and went 7 2/3 innings with four earned runs given up and six strikeouts. Katelyn Craker briefly appeared in the seventh and recorded one out.
Martini had three hits and two RBI and Chelsea DeLong had a pair of hits with three RBI.
In the nightcap, Cameron wasn't as lucky and they took a 5-4 lead in the seventh inning but a one out double put the tying run at the plate. The Aggies would intentionally walk to set up a double play to end the game instead after a fly out to right field the Mustangs singled up the middle to tie the game. MSU's next hitter cranked a first pitch from Sonora Zukerman back up the middle for the game winner.Â
Martini opened the game with her 17th homer of the season and Breezy McComas added a RBI double to give CU an early 2-0 lead. After a MSU run in the first, Macy McKay and Martini had a RBI in the second.Â
Midwestern State had a two run homer in the second inning and DeLong gave CU a 5-3 lead in after the top of the sixth. The Mustangs would take back a run in the bottom half of the inning off a single.
Zukerman (9-6) was charged with the loss after going 6 2/3 innings with four earned runs given up; Cameron out hit the Mustangs 12 to 10 and left 10 runners on base.
The series split with the Aggies will send MSU to 22-20 overall and 9-15 in the LSC.
Cameron will quickly turn around and visit Newman in Wichita, Kan. on Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader.Â
