LAWTON – After being delayed a day, the Aggie baseball team finished off their three game series with Tarleton State by splitting Monday's double-header with the Texans, falling in game one 2-1 and taking game two 11-5. Cameron used three homers in game two to move to 16-25 overall this season and 9-20 in Lone Star Conference play.
The Texans got on the board first in game one, putting up a one spot in the top of the second inning via a solo homerun. They added to that lead in the top of the third, scoring a run on a base hit through the left side of the infield.
After a scoreless fourth inning, Cameron got on the board for their first run of game one in the fifth, as
Justin Winters came all the way around to score from first on a groundball from
Tyler Palmer that resulted in a throwing error by the TSU shortstop.
Both teams would go scoreless in the sixth and seventh inning as TSU secured the 2-1 victory.
Javarias Banks got his sixth loss of the season after giving up nine hits, allowing two runs, with one of those being unearned, and striking out six Texan batters.
Cameron was held to just two hits in game one as
Nate Hale and Winters each had a base hit and Winters scored the lone CU run.
In the final game of the series, out-hit themselves in the opening frame with three hits;
Jonathan Reyes opened the inning with a double to center field and
Steven Swingle doubled him in for the first run with one out. In the next at-bat Winters hit his second homer of the season to score two and send the Ags up 3-0.
Tarleton State would push across a run in the next frame before Winters hit his second homer of the game to put CU up three runs again. However, the Texans picked up a run in the fourth off an Aggie error and added two more with two outs in the fifth to tie the game at four each.
Following a scoreless sixth Swingle and Winters both dropped down hits put runners on second and third with one out. After a walk,
Matt Nilmeyer doubled to left center to score two and
Tyler McKinzie squeaked a single through the middle to put Cameron up three after seven.
The Aggies biggest inning came in the eighth as four runs crossed the plate. After a leadoff walk by
Tyler Cook, Reyes reached on an error and both of them moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by Hale. Swingle then drove in Reyes and Cook on a single. Winters struck out in the next at bat, but with two outs,
Brandon Wright hit his first homer of the year to put CU up 11-4.
Tarleton State was able to get another run in the top of the ninth, but
Deven Youngstedt got the final two outs to give CU the game two win.
CU's starter,
Codey Upton, went four and a thirds innings and gave up four runs, three earned, on seven hits with four strikeouts.
Jake Winters came in and pitched three and two thirds solid innings, giving up just one run on three hits. He retired seven in a row at one point and got his first win of the season.
Swingle and Winters each had three hits and three RBI in game two, while Reyes and McKinzie each had a pair of hits and Nilmeyer and Wright both drove in two runs.
The split moves the Texans to 18-18 on the year with a 12-14 LSC mark.
Cameron will have a quick turnaround as they head to Weatherford, Okla. tomorrow to face Southwestern Oklahoma for a single, nine inning game starting at 3 p.m.
