Game Recap: Baseball |

Colgan drives in six as Aggies sweep ENMU

LAWTON – The Aggie baseball team took both games of a double-header with Eastern New Mexico on Saturday afternoon, taking game one 4-2 and game two 9-7. With the double-header sweep, Cameron improves to 19-25 overall this season and 11-20 in Lone Star Conference action.

The Aggie offense continued their strong play as they tallied 18 hits and 13 runs on the day, with Russ Colgan driving in six of those runs in game two. Colgan had an RBI triple, an RBI single, and a grand slam in the night cap, and fell just a double short of the cycle.

Cameron got on the board first in the game one, after Brandon Wright reached base on a one out walk, moved to third on a failed pickoff attempt, and then scored on a hard hit to the third baseman by Tyler Palmer.

The Aggies added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning. Nate Hale led off with a walk and then scored on a hit by Justin Winters, who advanced to third on a throwing error. Winters then scored on an error by the Greyhound shortstop to give CU the early 3-0 lead.

ENMU struck for a run in the top of the fourth on a solo homer to cut into the CU lead.

The Aggies added another run in the fifth inning, as Matt Nilmeyer singled through the left side of the infield to drive in Hale.

The Greyhounds cut the Aggie lead in half in the top of the sixth, as a run came in to score on a CU error, but that's all they would get as Deven Youngstedt pitched a perfect seventh to secure the 4-2 win.

Dirk Masters got his fifth win of the season after going six innings and giving up two runs, one earned, on six hits with five strikeouts. Youngstedt earned his third save of the season.

Hale reached base three times in game one, twice via a hit, and scored two of the Aggies runs.

Game two started out with the Greyhounds putting up three runs in the top of the first. Cameron responded in the second with two runs of their own. After Winters walked, Colgan got his first hit with a triple to the left center gap to put CU on the board. Colgan then scored on a groundout by Wright to cut the ENMU lead down to just one.

After a solo shot from ENMU in the top of the third, CU struck back for a run of their own in their half of the inning as Winters drove in Hale on the Aggies second triple of the game.

Cameron tied the game and took the lead in the bottom of the fifth, as Colgan drove in his second run of the game on a single to right and then scored on a wild pitch later on in the inning to put CU up 5-4 after five.

Eastern took back the lead as they struck for three runs on four hits in the top of the sixth. However, Colgan didn't let that lead last for long. After the Aggies loaded the bases, Colgan unloaded them with a two out grand slam, his second homer of the season, to give Cameron a 9-7 lead.

After Logan Fanning shut the Greyhounds down in the seventh and eighth, Youngstedt erased a CU error to start the ninth with a double play and then got a fly out for the final out and his second save of the day.

CU's starter, Javarias Banks, went five and a third innings while giving up six runs on eight hits with five strikeouts. Fanning came in for the Ags and pitched two and a third innings, giving up one run on six hits with three punch-outs.

Colgan's big day ended with him going 3-5, scoring two runs, and driving in six. Winters added three hits, two runs, and an RBI, and Hale scored three of CU's nine runs.

The two loses drop the Greyhounds to 14-27 overall and 9-19 in LSC play.

Both teams will meet again for the third and final game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m. where the Aggie seniors will be honored right before first pitch.
