LAWTON – The Aggie baseball team lost the first game of a three game series against Angelo State on Friday 2-1, despite a strong three hit outing by CU's pitching staff. The loss drops CU to 14-17 overall and 8-12 in Lone Star Conference play.
CU's starter,
Jake Winters, pitched seven and a third strong innings, giving up no earned runs on just three hits, striking out five, and walking just one. Â
Logan Fanning came in to finish the eighth and pitch the ninth and did so without giving up a hit and striking out three.
Cameron out-hit ASU eight hits to three, but committed five errors, which led to the Ram's two runs.
Angelo State opened up the game with a run in the top of the first as their leadoff hitter reached on a CU error and then came around to score on a fielder's choice two batters later. The Rams added another run in the top of the fifth on an error by CU's left fielder.
The Aggies threatened in the bottom of the second with back to back one out hits, but failed to get a run across the plate. Their next chance didn't come till the bottom of the seventh, and they capitalized by cutting the ASU lead to 2-1 on a pair of hits and a sacrifice bunt by
Tyler Palmer that scored
Brandon Wright, who reached on a single to center to start the inning.
Cameron tried to strike again in the bottom of the eighth, as
Jonathan Reyes singled to lead off the inning and
Matt Nilmeyer reached on an error to put runners on first and second with no outs. However a strikeout and a double-play by ASU shut down CU's chances in the eight.
After a quick top of the ninth, the Aggies got a runner on to lead off the inning, but three straight outs led by ASU closer, Graylon Brown secured the 2-1 win for the Rams.
Reyes, Wright, and
Tyler McKinzie led the Aggies with two hits apiece, while Palmer had the lone RBI for Cameron.
