Aggies drop season finale double-header at WT

CANYON, Texas – The Aggie baseball team closed out their 2015 regular season by falling in a double-header to West Texas A&M on Saturday, losing game one 7-6 and game two 16-10. Cameron closes out the season with a 19-29 overall record and an 11-24 Lone Star Conference mark.

Cameron put up the first run of game one in the top of the first as Steven Swingle drove in Jonathan Reyes, who singled to lead off the inning. Three hits and three runs in the top of the first inning for WT would erase that early lead by CU as a Buff RBI triple and a two run homer gave them a 3-1 lead.

In the bottom of the third, West Texas added another run on an RBI single and then scored two more in the bottom of the fifth on another RBI triple and a wild pitch to give them a 6-1 lead.

After being held scoreless in the second through fifth innings, the Aggies exploded for five runs in the top of the sixth to tie the ballgame. Nate Hale singled in Reyes for the first run, and then Russ Colgan drove in Hale on an RBI single of his own. Kaden Hardzog then scored on a double from Tyler Cook after reaching base on a hit earlier in the inning. The last two runs of the inning scored on an RBI single from Brandon Wright that resulted on an error by the WT shortstop, making it 6-6.

Cameron got two on in the top of the seventh, but was unable to cash in. A double and a pair of walks in the bottom of the inning loaded the bases for the Buffs, and then a sacrifice flyout scored the game winning run, giving West Texas the 7-6 walk-off win.

Javarias Banks started the game for the Ags, giving up six runs on six hits with just two strikeouts in five innings of work. Deven Youngstedt (2-2) got the loss as he pitched the final one and a third innings and gave up one run on one hit.

Reyes and Hale led CU in game one with a pair of hits each, while Reyes scored one run and Hale scored and drove in a run.

The Buffs continued their momentum into game two as they scored five runs in the top of the first inning. The Aggies got one back in the second on a Tyler McKinzie sacrifice fly, but WT came right back in the bottom of the inning and scored two more to got up 7-1.

Cameron made their first comeback in the fourth inning as they scored two runs thanks to McKinzie as he drove in two on a single to right field. After WT scored a run on a walk in the bottom of the fourth, CU put three more runs on the board in the top of the fifth to cut the Buff's lead to 9-6. Swingle drove in the first two on a homer to center and the third run came in to score on a grounder off the bat of Hardzog.

West Texas came back with a three spot of their own as they took a 12-6 lead on a pair of doubles in the bottom of the sixth.

After a scoreless seventh inning, the only scoreless inning of the game, the Aggies put three more runs on the board as a two out, two RBI single by Cook and an error by WT shrunk the Buff's lead back to just three runs at 12-9. That wouldn't last long as WT scored four runs on a homer and two RBI doubles in the bottom of the eighth to put them up 16-9 after eight.

Cameron was able to get one more run across the plate as Tyler West reached on a base hit and then scored on an RBI single by Tyler Palmer. That was all they would get, as the Buffs would take the game 16-10 and the series 3-0.

Five pitchers took the mound for CU in game two, as Codey Upton (3-2) got the loss pitching just two thirds of an inning and gave up five runs, two of which were earned.

Reyes had two more hits in the night cap, giving him four for the day. Cook, Hardzog, Colgan and Palmer each had two hits as well, while Cook had a pair of RBI and three runs scored in the loss.

The sweep of the double-header moves WT to 34-16 on the season and 23-12 in league play.
