Two double-doubles lead Aggies to win in opener

DENTON, Texas – Cameron had two players with double-doubles to guide themselves to a season opening win on Friday over UC at Colorado Springs in four sets (25-23, 25-20, 22-25, 25-21).

The Aggies also had ten individuals with at least a kill recorded but it was the senior Kat Evans who helped guide the CU offensive attack with 16 kills, 20 digs, and she recorded four block assists.  Freshman Jordan Williams also had double-double after knocking down 16 kills and adding 16 digs, while Tori Luckenbill dished out 42 assists and had nine digs. Ciandra Seabourn paced the Ags with a team high 25 digs.

Cameron came up with a .164 hitting percentage with 52 kills and only 23 errors, the team was five short of 100 digs in the early afternoon meeting.

Evans provided enough of an extra spark in the opening set with five kills to take an edge in a set where neither team could pull away.  There were 16 different ties but it was a kill from Williams and Evans to break a 23-23 tie to put CU ahead of the Mountain Lions early.

In the second set, UCCS took the first two points but rattled off ten unanswered points but the scoring would level off and the Mountain Lions took eight of the next ten points to make it a 12-10 score. However, the Aggies would pull away to win 25-20 after knocking down 14 kills and hitting .238 on the court.

Uneven hitting for the Aggies allowed the Mountain Lions to claw back in the third set by winning 25-22 with CU hitting .094 with nine kills and six errors.  While in set four, both teams started neck and neck but three unanswered points from kills by Evans and Kayla Allen gave CU an 11-8 advantage which they never relinquished.

The Mountain Lions were led by Kim Catlett with 17 kills and Taylor Hamilton was two kills behind.

Cameron has now won nine out of their last ten season opening matches.

The Aggies will face Arkansas Tech on Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
