Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cameron unable to close comeback, fall to WT 83-78

LAWTON – Cameron rallied back from 17 points in the second half and took a late lead but a six unanswered points by West Texas A&M in the final 26 seconds would be enough to overtake CU 83-78 in a heartbreaker on Sunday night in the Aggie Gym.

Five CU players would hit double-figures with Jamaal Brantley scoring 17, Deondre Ray had 15, JV Long came up with 14, James Cross netted 11, and Cameron Lee put in 10.   Cameron was out-rebounded 31-to-33 but only committed nine turnovers against the Buffs.  Despite CU not giving up the ball much it was an Aggie turnover with five seconds to go with a three-point WT lead that sealed the game for the visiting squad from Canyon, Texas.  The Buffs would steal the ball on the CU side of the court and picked up a layup at the buzzer to close out the night.

Ray and Cross led the Aggies with seven boards but as a team they continued their struggle from the arc by going 3-for-16.

West Texas A&M came out on fire in the first half and they would lead by double-digits thanks to 51.7% shooting (15-29) and banking six treys.   Cameron couldn't match the Buffs early and shot 40% (10-25) from the field but were limited only one in nine attempts at the arc.  At the halftime marker the Buffs would take a 47-32 lead into the locker room; Lee and Ray both paced CU's scoring with six each.

In the second half, all the momentum was all on CU's side and they tore through the 17 point West Texas A&M lead and by the midway marker the Aggies made it a new game with a 59-58 advantage.   From there both teams traded the lead and never had much more than a two possession advantage. Cameron would pull ahead 78-77 with 44 seconds left after a pair of made JV Long free-throws.    WT in the next possession hit a jumper to retake the lead what ended up being the final time and hand the Aggies their first home loss of the season.

West Texas A&M had five players in double-figures with David Chavlovich having a team high 17 points.

The win for WT snapped a two game league skid and moved them to 12-6 overall and 1-2 in the Lone Star Conference.   Cameron will fall to 9-7 overall and 2-2 in the LSC.

The Aggies will remain at home to face Texas A&M-Commerce on Wednesday, Jan. 13 at 7:30 p.m.
