LAWTON – The Cameron women's basketball team went toe-to-toe with top-ranked West Texas A&M but cold shooting in the fourth quarter on Sunday afternoon handed CU a 76-52 home loss. Cameron went scoreless from the field for nearly six minutes in the final period while WT would go on 13-1 run to squash the Aggies hopes off an upset. Â
Despite the lopsided final score, Cameron left for the locker room at halftime with a one point lead. In the fourth quarter the Aggies would go 2-for-11 from the field with West Texas A&M outscoring CU 26-9 in the final ten minutes.Â
Brandi Leal led the Aggies with 13 points with
Dayla Threatt adding 11.Â
DJ Vallier pulled down a team high eight boards but CU would lose the overall rebounding battle 41-to-33. Cameron would shoot 17-for-55 (30.9%) from the field with five made treys, West Texas would go 27-for-58 (46.6%) on their end of the court.
Early in the contest neither team could gather much momentum in the first quarter but CU's defense held the top –ranked Lady Buffs scoreless for the final 4:30 minutes and entered the stoppage with a 16-13 lead.  In the second period, Cameron started to open up some distance on West Texas A&M and a Leal layup closed up six unanswered points to give the Aggies a 26-20 lead.  However, WT responded back with a seven point run to overtake the Aggies forcing Webb to call a timeout.    The Aggies would get four straight points from
Markita Zeigler to take a 30-29 lead into the locker room. Through the first half Threatt led the Aggies with seven points and the team would shoot 10-for-25 (40.2%) from the floor.
The turning point of the game didn't come until the final minutes of the third quarter where WT closed out with four unanswered points in the final 30 seconds to take a sizeable 50-43 advantage into the quarter change. Â Â In the fourth period after a
Natalie Halbleib three-pointer at the 9:13 mark the Aggie offense would go cold for six minutes until
Brittany Hill hit a layup. Â However, those two shots would be CU's lone buckets in the quarter in the loss.
Michaela Neuhaus led WT with 26 points, six of which were made at the arc. Â
With the win over the Aggies, WT will remain undefeated at 15-0 and 4-0 in Lone Star Conference play. Cameron will fall to 8-5 overall and 2-2 in the LSC.
Cameron will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 13 to host Texas A&M-Commerce at 5:30 p.m.Â
