Ray's tip-in gives Aggies 80-79 win over #11 Angelo State

LAWTON – Deondre Ray hit a second chance tip-in to give the Aggies an 80-79 win over #11 Angelo State on Wednesday evening to close out CU's three game home stand.  The Aggies rallied back from 12 points down in the final five minutes to go with Ray providing his first career double-double performance.

"We can score in bunches if we do things the right way," said head coach Nate Gamet.  We can get stops in three or four possessions and the guys just did a really good job staying in there.  A lot of teams would have folded down…but they just kept battling and chipped away."

Ray ended the night with 19 points and 10 boards, Jamaal Brantley would be the team's leading scorer with 20 and he added seven rebounds.  JV Long came up with 18 points, which was his second highest scoring game of his career.  Cameron Lee knocked in 13 points and had five rebounds.

The Aggies would shoot 29-for-61 (47.5%) from the field, slightly better than ASU's 31-for-70 (44.3%).   Cameron knocked down eight treys and shot a season high 42.1% at the arc.  In rebounding, CU would have 45 which were 11 more than the Rams.

Brantley carried the Aggies early scoring 12 of their first 14 points but after a free-throw with 13:02 left, he would go silent for the rest of the half.  Lee picked up the pace from there with 10 points but turnovers plagued Cameron with 11 and Angelo State would pick up 15 of their 44 first half points off of.  The Aggies would shoot a 53.6% clip but would trail Angelo State by five at the break.

Out of the locker room, ASU opened the second half with seven unanswered points to take a 51-39 advantage on the Aggies.  Cameron clawed out of hole and a Ray dunk at the 8:15 mark tied the game at 63 each.  However, the Aggies would go scoreless for the next four minutes with the Rams putting up 12 unanswered points to lead 75-63.  The roles would reverse down the stretch and the Aggies scored 12 unanswered in the final four minutes to tie the game at 75 after a Ray free throw with a minute to go.  In the final seconds both teams would take the lead but a tip-in by Ray with six seconds remaining proved to be the game winner.

Angelo State was led by Stedman Allen who had 21 points and with the loss the Rams will fall to 14-3 overall and 2-3 in the Lone Star Conference; Cameron will move up to 11-7 and 4-2 in league play.

Cameron will visit Texas A&M-Kingsville next on Saturday at 8 p.m. in continued LSC action.
