Aggies down Angelo State in overtime

LAWTON – Cameron lived at the arc and halted a three game Angelo State winning streak in overtime.  The Aggies tossed up 40 shots and sank 13 at the three-point line to beat ASU 87-83 to close out their home stand with a victory.

Wednesday night's contest is the Aggies' first overtime contest in two seasons, which was a 76-72 win on Feb. 8, 2014 over Tarleton State in Lawton.

"Everyone on our team went out and competed tonight," said head coach Tom Webb.   "It was fun to coach tonight and I'm just proud of them."

Brandi Leal led the Ags with 23 points and was one short of tying her own three-point record with seven made shots from beyond the arc.  Dayla Threatt picked up her first career double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds.   Brittney Hill and Charron Montgomery also hit double-figures with 10 points each; Montgomery would add five assists.

The Aggies won the rebounding battle with 45, which was six more than ASU; DJ Vallier came off the CU bench and had seven boards and six points.  Angelo State would shoot the ball better at a 47.8% clip compared to the Aggies' 42.9%; the difference would be CU's 13 treys, nearly doubling the Rambelles' seven.

At the end of the night, turnovers assisted ASU down the stretch with the 14 CU miscues allowing for ten extra points for the visitors from San Angelo.

Leal's 11 point first quarter kept the Aggies on-pace with the Rambelles, and Hill closed the period with a jumper under the basket with time expiring to give CU a 23-20 lead.   Cameron continued to have momentum after the stoppage and seven unanswered points handed the Ags a 10 point advantage.   Despite shooting 7-for-21 from the field in the second period, the Aggies nailed four treys and picked up nine second chance points to take a 42-35 lead at the halftime horn.  Leal would have 14 points and Threatt had eight points with seven boards; the Aggies dominated the rebounding battle with 25 to ASU's 13.

The Rambelles closed the gap on the Aggies and got within three (56-53) with 1:20 left in the third quarter.  However, Cameron finished the period on a 6-0 run with Threatt scoring five points during that span.   Angelo State shut down the Aggies offense in the final 10 minutes by holding them to only 11 points and tied the game at 73 with 15 seconds left.  The Aggies would have the ball but would miss a jumper under the hoop at the buzzer to force the game to overtime.

Angelo State opened the extra period with a bucket, and the Aggies would play catch up until Leal knocked down her seventh three-pointer of the night to push them up 77-76.  Both teams would trade the lead until Threatt sank a pair of free throws with 43 seconds left to give the Aggies the lead 83-82 for the final time.

The Rambelles' Taylor Dorsey led her squad with 27 points as they would fall to 10-5 and 3-2 in Lone Star Conference play.  Cameron will move to 9-6 overall and 3-3 in the LSC.

The Aggies will return to the court on Saturday at 6 p.m. at Texas A&M-Kingsville.
