KINGSVILLE, Texas -- The game wasn't pretty for the Aggies but they held off pesky Texas A&M-Kingsville squad 67-62 on Saturday night. Â Cameron won the game without hitting a bucket from the field for the final 9:30 minutes.Â
Only to add to the Aggies luck, they survived a late turnover with 11 seconds left and the Javelinas being fouled during a three pointer. Â In a 65-62 contest, TAMUK missed a golden opportunity to tie the game but missed all three shots at the line. Â The Aggies were given opportunities on their end as well, and they would miss nine free throws in 26 chances in the second half keeping Texas A&M-Kingsville in the contest. Â
"There wasn't anything pretty about tonight outside of the final box score," said head coach
Tom Webb. Â "The fourth quarter was just ugly and physical for both teams, we couldn't really ever get on a flow in that last ten minutes." Â Â
"This league is just crazy and anything can really happen on any given night but it's a win for us at the end of the day and we'll make the long trip home on a good note still."Â
Final Box Score (PDF)Brandi Leal was nearly perfect from the field and a missed bucket in the fourth quarter put her at 6-for-7 overall but she landed all four attempts for the arc to lead the Aggies with 21 points. Â The senior also grabbed five rebounds which was a season high. Â
Dayla Threatt had 11 points with both
Brittany Hill and
Markita Zeigler having 10 each. Â Â
DJ Vallier had five points but came up big with a career high 14 rebounds which matched Threatt's season high for the Aggies this season. Â Threatt would have seven boards with CU winning the rebounding battle 47-to-35. Â Â
The Aggies were limited to only 47 shots which matched a season low last set against East Central in the second game of the season. Â Shooting wise, Cameron went 36.2% from the field which was the lowest they shot in a victory this season; Texas A&M-Kingsville would go 34.9% on their end of the court.Â
The Javelinas hung with the Aggies through the first two quarters by tossing up 15 more shots and Cameron couldn't pull further away than six points (31-25) with 4:35 left in the second quarter. Leal had a team high 11 points at the halftime horn, with the Aggies shooting 11-for-25 (44.0%) from the field, and shooting 5-for-8 (62.5%) at the arc. Â Texas A&M-Kingsville went 14-for-40 (35%) on their side of the court and they would make a pair of treys on eight shots. Â Â
Out of the locker room, TAMUK continued to stay on the Aggies heels with CU only outscoring them 22-21. Â In the fourth period, Hill sank a trey in the first 30 seconds but it would be the Aggies last bucket of the game and only one of the quarter. Â Despite the Aggie offensive shutdown, the Javelinas couldn't do much either and only made two of their shots. Â Both teams would combine for 12.0% shooting and each team scoring nine points in the final 10 minutes.Â
Kaylina Roher led Texas A&M-Kingsville with 16 points, two others would also hit double-figures.Â
Texas A&M-Kingsville is now winless in their last 23 Lone Star Conference contests and will fall to 5-12 overall and 0-6 in the LSC. Â Cameron will move to 10-6 overall and 4-3 in league play. Â
The Aggies will return up to Lawton to host Texas Woman's at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 27.
