Aggie men open season with 72-57 win over Newman

COMMERCE, Texas – The Cameron men's basketball team opened their season with a 72-57 win over Newman at the Lone Star/Heartland Conference Challenge on Friday night.

Trey Hall and Tyus Momoh posted double figures in the victory.

Hall led the Ags with 24 points including six three-pointers and shot 9-for-13 from the field.

Momoh bested his previous career high by nine points by netting 22 against the Jets as Cameron's second top scorer of the night.

Delvonte Pierre recorded a team high nine boards, helping Cameron out-rebound Newman 41 to 38.

As a team, the Aggies shot 40 percent from the field and 42 percent from the arc and line, besting the Jets everywhere except the charity stripe where Newman went 15-for-18 for 83 percent.

Newman stayed out of the Aggies' reach for most of the first half leading by as much as six. However, with five minutes remaining in the period, CU spurred an 8-0 run aided by two treys from Hall and a Momoh layup to take their first 29-26 lead of the game at the 3:35 marker.

The Jets inched within one with two good free throws, but Hall helped the Aggies maintain their edge with two more three-pointers as the Aggies led 38-33 at half time.

Hall and Momoh combined for 28 of the Aggies' first half points as CU shot 42 percent from the field and 53 percent from behind the arc. Newman beat the Ags at the line, making all nine of their free throws while CU only went 1-for-5 to open the game.

Cameron maintained momentum entering the second half and five minutes in surged for a 22 to 4 run to gain their largest lead of 21 at the 4:06 marker. The Ags out-rebounded the Jets 25 to 15 in the last half before cruising to a 72-57 victory.

Newman's Taylor Schieber led the Jets with 14 points.

Next, the Aggies will play Oklahoma Christian at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
