CU women fall in season opener to St. Mary’s

STEPHENVILLE, Texas–  Savanna James earned her first double-double with CU while the Aggies would fall 81-64 to St. Mary's in their season opener at Tarleton State's TexAnn Classic on Friday afternoon.
 
James led the Aggies with 14 points and ten rebounds to earn her first career double-double at Cameron. Also shooting in double figures for the Ags was Brittany Hill with 13 points and Charron Montgomery with 11 points.

Freshman Ava Battese recorded three steals and six points in her collegiate debut.

Cameron shot 33 percent from the field and made just three of their 30 tries from behind the arc. While at the line, the Aggies shot 68 percent, going 13-for-19 at the charity stripe.
 
St. Mary's only made two of their 18 three-point tries but shot 58 percent from the field and made 71 percent of their free throws.
 
CU would take a 17-14 first quarter lead and turn it into their largest lead of nine in the second quarter opening it with six consecutive points off two made free throws and two layups.
 
However, eight Aggie turnovers turned into 12 points for St. Mary's helping the Rattlers go to the locker room with a 36-31 lead at the half.
 
In the opening half, CU went 5-for-6 from the line and made the half's only three-pointers with two from the arc; however, St. Mary's made up for it down low, scoring all but ten of their points in the paint.
 
The Rattlers would explode in the third quarter scoring 27 points while limiting the Aggies to just eight points.
 
St. Mary's opened their largest lead of 26 points in the fourth quarter for a 39-65 advantage.
 
The Rattlers maintained their momentum to shoot 78 percent from the field in the second half to cruise to an 81-64 victory over the Aggies.
 
St. Mary's (1-0) had five reach double figures in scoring with Tyra Cormier leading the Rattlers with 16 points.
 
The Aggies (0-1) will continue play at noon on Saturday against Missouri S&T.
