Box Score WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The charity stripe proved to be the difference in Cameron's 60-45 win over St. Mary's in the Patterson Auto Center Classic on Friday evening.
The now 4-0 Aggies shot 81 percent (13-for-16) at the line headed by 6-for-6 free throw effort by JV Long, while they kept the Rattlers at just 3-for-4.
Cameron paired their shooting with a solid defensive effort as the Ags recorded 11 steals with Delvonte Pierre nabbing four of his own. The Rattlers committed 18 turnovers, which CU turned into 19 points.
Tyler Williams and Trey Hall led Cameron with 12 points, and Long added 10 points.
Long and Williams also grabbed a team high six boards, although CU was out-rebounded by St. Mary's 45 to 34.
The Aggies (20-for-61) and Rattlers (19-for-56) were neck and neck shooting from the floor, but the Aggies had the advantage at the arc, making seven treys to the Rattlers' four.
Cameron held the lead for a majority of the first half, trailing by one point for over two minutes in the beginning of the game.
Fouls and miscues plagued the Rattlers as STMU committed 13 turnovers, six of which were forced by Aggie steals that Cameron turned into 11 points.
Making all six free throws, Long helped the Aggies jump to their largest lead of 13 as CU scored ten points during a nearly six minute STMU scoring drought up to the final minute of the half.
Cameron led 28-17 at halftime after keeping STMU off the foul line while shooting 7-for-10 at the charity stripe themselves.
Both sides shot almost even from the field with CU going 9-for-28 and STMU shooting 8-for-28 to open the game.
The Ags would experience a six minute scoring drought themselves in the second half, but STMU did not take much advantage scoring nine points to take a four point lead at
9:36 minute marker.
The score knotted twice more and for a final time at 42 all as Cameron took the lead back with an 18 to 3 run in the final six minutes to win 60-45.
St. Mary's (1-3) was led by Skyler Brooks with ten points.
Cameron will face Our Lady of the Lake at 4 p.m. on Saturday in Wichita Falls, Texas.
