Cameron's comeback falls short in loss at Oklahoma Christian

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The Aggie women suffered their second straight loss on Saturday as they fell to Oklahoma Christian, 87-83, despite recording 18 steals as a team and a CU career high in points from Caitlin Clancy.

Cameron, who is now 1-3 on the season, started out strong, winning the first quarter 2-18, but a 22-16 second quarter by OCU game them a 40-37 lead going in to halftime. CU shot just 32 percent in the first half, going 5-17 from three, but hit 8-10 from the free throw line. Clancy led the Ags at the break with nine points.

Both teams were evenly matched in quarter three with each team scoring 17 points. Early in the fourth quarter, the Lady Eagles had opened up a 10 point lead, but the Aggies came back and, after going back-and-forth for a few minutes, CU was able to tie the game at 80 with 1:30 left thanks to a three by Natalie Halbleib and an old fashioned three point play by Jamie Bonnarens.  Oklahoma Christian came right back and made a three of their own paired with two free throws gave them an 85-80 lead with just over a minute left to play. Just 10 seconds later, Bonnarens hit a three point shot to cut the lead to two. Halbleib then recorded her third steal of the game to give CU a chance to tie the game with a two pointer or take a one point lead with a three.  After a timeout, the Aggies ran a play to get a look, and Halbleib drove to the basket, but she was called for an offensive foul and the Lady Eagles got the ball back with three seconds left. Cameron fouled OCU's Audrey Hayes, and her two free throws sealed Oklahoma Christian's 87-83 win.

Clancy finished with a team high 17 points, while Savanna James had 13, Bonnarens finished with 12, and Charron Montgomery had 10. A few days after recorded seven steals against UCO, Brittany Hill led CU with five steals, while also dishing out six assists. Montgomery and Halbleib each had three steals, while Bonnarens and Ava Battese had two apiece. Halbleib also led Cameron with seven rebounds.

As a team, Cameron shot 36 percent from the field, 30 percent from three point range, and hit 59 percent of their foul shots. The Aggies grabbed 38 rebounds, while totaling 17 assists and blocking six shots. CU turned the ball over 19 times but forced 29 OCU turnovers, with 18 of those coming off of CU steals. CU was just one steal shy of breaking the Cameron record of 19 team steals in a game.

The Lady Eagles, who are also 1-3 now, shot 45 percent from the field, 31 percent from the three point line, and 75 percent from the charity stripe. They were led by Sarah Parker who had 21 points and 11 rebounds, while three others scored in double-figures.

Cameron will be back in action next weekend, Nov. 25-26, as they compete in the West Texas A&M Lady Buff Invite where they will play Colorado Christian and Tuskegee.
