James and Halbleib record double-doubles in win over Tuskegee

CANYON, Texas – The Cameron women's basketball team closed out the Pak-A-Sak West Texas A&M Thanksgiving Classic with an 84-71 win over Tuskegee on Saturday night. They finished the classic 1-1 and are now 2-4 on the season.

Cameron and Tuskegee went back and forth in the first quarter with each team holding a lead through the first 10 minutes of play. After CU tied the game at 22 points apiece with just 21 seconds left in the quarter, the Tigerettes hit a shot to take a 24-22 lead into the quarter break. The second quarter was similar to the first, with the two teams trading buckets throughout. Tuskegee took back the lead with 2:33 seconds left in the half and stretched it out to seven, before CU's Caitlin Clancy hit a three point shot to cut the lead to 46-42 heading into the half.

Through the first 20 minutes of play, CU shot 38 percent from the field, 50 percent from three point range, and 70 percent from the free throw line. Clancy led the Ags with 13 points through two quarters, going 3-3 from deep, while Ava Battese had 10 points in the first half, also hitting three shots from deep.

Tuskegee controlled the game for most of the third quarter, until the Aggies took the lead at the 2:46 mark. Cameron kept up their momentum and led 65-62 at the end of quarter number three. The fourth quarter belonged to CU as they extended their lead and only allowed nine points to close out the game 84-71.  

The Aggies shot 40 percent from the field, 42 percent from three point range, and hit 10-13 from the free throw line. They won the rebounding battle 45-41 and had 17 assists and 18 turnovers. On defense, CU forced 23 turnovers and had 11 steals.

Individually, Clancy finished with a season high 18 points, while Jamie Bonnarens bettered her season high with 17 points. Both Savanna James and Natalie Halbleib had double-doubles with James having 13 points and 10 rebounds and Halbleib having 11 points and 10 rebounds.

The Tigerettes, who are now 2-5, shot 39 percent from the field, 25 percent from deep, and 64 percent from the charity stripe. They were led by Rachel Brownlee, who had 20 points, and Jamese Abney, who had 15 points.  

Additionally, Savanna James was named to the PAK-A-SAK Thanksgiving Classic Women's All-Tournament Team after averaging a double-double in CU's two contests. She was joined by tournament MVP Allie Decker from WT, along with Decker's teammates Sasha Watson and Sydney Walton, and Colorado Christian's Claire Paxton.

For their next game, the Aggies will start conference play as they travel to Texas A&M-Commerce on Thursday, Dec. 1 with the game starting at 11 a.m.
