COMMERCE, Texas – In their first taste of Lone Star Conference action this season, the Aggie women's basketball team lost in an offensive shootout to Texas A&M-Commerce, 94-89. Cameron is now 2-5 on the season and 0-1 in conference play.
In the first quarter, the Lions controlled the first five minutes of play, but CU came back and took an 18-17 lead into the second frame. The Aggies used that second quarter to extend their lead to 12 and had a 45-33 lead at the half. Cameron shot 47.5 percent from the field in the first half, hitting 5-17 from the three point line, and 2-3 from the charity stripe. Both
Savanna James and
Natalie Halbleib had 14 points through the first 20 minutes of play.
The Aggies held a comfortable lead throughout the first five minutes of the third quarter, but Commerce started making their way back and tied the game at 56 with just over 3:30 left in the quarter. The two teams traded buckets and the score was back even at 62 by the end of the third frame.
Cameron struck first in the fourth on a three by
Ava Battese, but the Lions responded and reclaimed the lead and extended it to seven with 3:45 to go. The Aggies were able to cut that lead back down to one with 1:30 left, but a pair of free throws by A&M-Commerce would stretch the home team's lead back out to three with under a minute left in the game. A few CU turnovers and some clutch Lion free throws in the final seconds of the game would secure the 94-89 TAMUC win.
Cameron ended up shooting 45 percent from the field, 28 percent from three point range, and 50 percent from the charity stripe. They were out-rebounded 52-38, which resulted in 23 Lion second chance points. The Aggies only turned the ball over nine times, and had 18 assists and nine steals as a team.
Individually, James finished with 22 points, passing her previous Cameron career high of 17, while Halbleib recorded her second double-double in a row with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Also in double-figures for CU were
Cristina Soriano with 13 points and
Jamie Bonnarens with 10.
Texas A&M-Commerce, who is now 5-2 and 1-0 in LSC play, shot 44 percent from the field, went 2-11 from three point range, and hit 77 percent of their 31 free throws, which was 19 more attempts than CU had. The Lions were led by Krystal Pickron, who had a game-high 25 points, while Khala Riley had 19 points and Jenna Price recorded a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds.
Cameron will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 3 as they travel to Stephenville, Texas to play Tarleton State starting at 2 p.m.
