WICHITA, Kan. – It took a last second shot from Division I Wichita State to take down the Cameron women's basketball team 67-65 in an exhibition on Sunday afternoon.
The Aggies started out strong, shooting almost 50 percent from the field in the first quarter, while hitting 5-7 from three point range. While the second quarter wasn't quite as strong, CU took a 34-32 lead into halftime, with
Caitlin Clancy leading Cameron with seven points.
Cameron and WSU went back and forth in the third and fourth quarter, and every time the Shockers would try and pull away, the Aggies would strike back. CU was down four with just over two minutes left, but four straight points from
Brittany Hill tied the game at 62 with a minute left. After the Shockers converted an old fashioned three point play, Hill was able to work her magic again and cut the WSU lead to one point with less than 30 seconds left. The Aggies fouled WSU's Tamara Lee, who missed both free throws, giving Cameron a chance to take the lead. CU went down the court and
Savanna James got fouled with five seconds left. James hit one out of two to tie the game, and then the Shockers Diamond Lockhart got the ball and hit a layup as time expired to win the game, 67-65.
Cameron, who shot just over 36 percent from the field and three point range, while hitting on just nine of their 17 free throws, was lead by Hill's 14 points, including six in the last few minutes of play. Additionally,
Charron Montgomery added 12 points and James had 11 points and nine rebounds. CU had just 10 turnovers, compared to Wichita State's 17.
WSU was lead by Rangie Bressard, who had 17 points and 13 rebounds, while the team shot 45 percent from the field and just 20 percent from the three point line. They hit on 62 percent of their shots from the charity stripe, and controlled the rebounding battle 48-36.
The Aggies will officially start their season next weekend as they play in the Tarleton State Classic. They will take on St. Mary's on Friday, Nov. 11 at noon and then Missouri S&T on Saturday, Nov. 12 at noon.
