COMMERCE, Texas – It took an extra five minutes of play, but the Cameron men's basketball team secured their first Lone Star Conference win as they beat Texas A&M-Commerce in overtime, 81-74. The Aggies are now 7-1 overall and 1-0 in league play.
Cameron jumped out to an early lead in the first half, finding themselves up by 10 with just over 10 minutes passed in the game. However, the home team Lions surged back and tied the game up at 27 points apiece with 45 seconds left until halftime. Cameron responded and
JV Long scored with 34 seconds left to give CU the 29-27 lead at the break. The Aggies shot just 30 percent from the field, but hit 5-13 from three point range, and 4-6 from the free throw line through the first 20 minutes of play. Long and
Trey Hall each had seven points at the halfway mark.
In the second half, the two teams traded buckets back-and-forth until the Aggies extended their lead to seven around the 10 minute mark. The Lions wouldn't go quietly though, coming back and cutting the CU lead to one with just over two minutes left in the game. Neither team would score again until Long hit two three pointers to take a three point lead with just five seconds left. That's when TAMUC's Malik Albert hit a three point shot at the buzzer to send the game to overtime.
Overtime started with the Aggies hitting a three point shot, but the Lions combated that with one of their own. From then on, CU only missed one shot from the field and closed out overtime on an 11-2 run to secure the 81-74 win.
Cameron shot 39 percent from the field, 42 percent from three point range, and 68 percent from the free throw line. They out rebounded the Lions 46-44, and dominated in the paint (36-8) and on the fastbreak (12-0). The Aggies had four players reach double-digits in scoring. Long scored 18 points on 7-10 shooting, while grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out four assists.
Tyus Momoh tallied six of his 17 points in overtime, while shooting 4-6 from three point range.
Delvonte Pierre was one rebound short of a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds, and
Tyler Williams scored 11 points, which was his sixth game this season with 10 or more points.
This was Texas A&M-Commerce's first loss, as they are now 6-1 overall and 0-1 in LSC play. They shot 32 percent from the field, 38 percent from three point range, and 77 percent from the charity stripe. Albert lead the Lions with 23 points, while Trey Seymore chipped in 20, and De'Andre Carson had 14. Dorian Armstrong had a game-high 12 rebounds and four blocks.
CU will return to the court on Saturday, Dec. 3 as they continue their conference opening weekend with a contest against #16 Tarleton State, starting at 4 p.m.
