Barrett's career night leads CU past A&M-Kingsville

LAWTON, Okla. – Freshman Christian Barrett tallied a career high 19 points and eight rebounds to help guide the Aggies to their second conference victory against Texas A&M-Kingsville, 78-71, on Saturday evening.

Barrett played a key role in the Aggie's second half comeback, contributing a 7-for-8 effort at the charity stripe. Tyus Momoh also reached double figures with 15 points in the game.

In the first half, Cameron found themselves down ten points to start but would chip that lead down to just two with back-to-back treys and a layup with four minutes remaining.

Momoh made the Aggies' third three-pointer of half to inch within one in the final two minutes, but the Aggies would only get one more bucket in as the Javelinas outscored them 6-2 to carry a 33-28 advantage at the half.

TAMUK matched CU's three treys in the first frame and out-shot the Aggies on the floor 46 percent to 41 percent. The Javelinas also beat CU at the line going 6-for-7 while CU made 3-for-6.

However, the Aggies would find leverage in the second half improving their shooting from the field to 48 percent. Five minutes into the period, Cameron scored nine unanswered points over two minutes to tie the game at 42 all.

After falling behind two layups, Cameron tied it once more as Christian Barrett went 4-for-4 at the line setting up for a Jordan Lewis three-pointer for the Ags' first lead of the game 49-46 at the 11:37 marker.

The Aggies held a steady six point advantage over the Javelinas until TAMUK threatened with 4:30 to go by coming within two points after making a three-pointer.

But the charity stripe proved the difference for CU as they shot 20-for-25 at the line in the second half with Barrett shooting 7-for-8 and JV Long making all eight of his.

Cameron broke for their largest lead of nine points with 12 seconds remaining and would go on to win 78-71 to stay a perfect 5-0 in the Aggie Gym.

Both teams ended the contest shooting 44 percent from the field, with CU edging the Javelinas behind the arc by one shot making seven treys. TAMUK went 13-for-18 at the foul line.

CU also won the rebounding battle 38-33.

Overall, the Aggies are now 9-3 on the season and 2-1 in the league while TAMUK drops to 7-3 and encounters their first Lone Star Conference loss, 0-1.

Cameron will return to the Aggie Gym at 4 p.m. on New Year's Eve for a LSC contest with Angelo State.
